How much hops do we need on average for 5-gallon batch?

For bittering purposes if you do extract recipes you can increase your hops utilization by adding the bulk of the LME/DME at the end of the boil. Depending on the recipes you can save up a good amount of hops. This is only for the bittering with hops. I don't know/think that it makes a...

    Oversanitizing?

I've read that one quite a few times already, but is it just the "common knowledge" or are there any real studies on the subject?

Black IPA for a local competition

Your kidding right? The BJCP was founded in 1985... 2008 is the date of the latest review of the guidelines.

Black IPA for a local competition

Who removed the Black IPA style? Must not be talking about the BJCP since it's not even an official style (yet?). Just curious :)

    Chinook as single hop?

So I'm planning to brew a blonde ale with Chinook as the single hop in it. I'd like to do that so I get a good idea of what Chinook contribute as the hops in my recipes. I was wondering if other people had experiences with Chinook in a single hop beer and how they like it. I read that it's a...

What is the ultimate guide for the new homebrewer

John Palmer is a must. Every pages are wort(h) reading. I learned everything to get started and feel confortable. Then i started reading here and I learn new stuff everyday. Dont hesitate to read it more than once. It took me a few read to fully understand all the processes.

    Beer glasses questions

So I'm interested in buying some beer glasses. The ones I own are old, ugly, odd shaped and cannot even contain a 12oz bottle. I bottle my beer in 12oz bottles. Good shape for me when I come back from work. I was wondering, what size of glasses should I buy if I want to pour my beer...

Carbonation in my beer seems low.

It is, and this is why I carbed to 2.3 (In Britain they also serves it as low as 1.5 if I read correctly). But my problem was that it didn't feel like 2.3 in my bottle. I was not complaining that I don't like the low carb ;)

Carbonation in my beer seems low.

Hey just to let you know guys, storing in the fridge for 2 days made the difference! When I open my bottle the "Psshh" is less strong, so I guess that also mean I lost less CO2 ;)

    0 min hop addition

This makes a lot more sense now :) I wasn't aware of this method, I just though you were talking about partially cooling the wort, which I though wasn't a good advice in general for someone that doesn't know about it! I'll have to read about it now, thanks for making me loose (not) my time...

Going to visit NY. Looking for brewerie/pub

Hey thank for your answer guys! Yeah Heartland is the street right behind me! I might not stick to time square but it should remain close since we only stay a few days so we don't want to travel half of the time.

Maybe just change the person who this gift is for and choose a "less loved" one ;)

    0 min hop addition

I don't have much experience but in my last batch (which I haven't tested yet heh) I added hops at 5 min before flameout and will dry hops for 5 days. Hopefully this will give me a nice hops aroma in my APA.

    0 min hop addition

I don't think partially cooling is a good idea. In a certain temperature range the wort is susceptible to bacteria and oxidation.
