    BIG barleywine recommendations?

This is a blend of Barleywine and ESB, high on ABV and low on IBUs I think the FG will go well below 1.040 because of NB's high alcohol tolerant yeast strain. 8 gallons Partial Mash 1.129~OG→1.040~FG→11.6%ABV 26 IBU 34.1°L SRM Yeasts Wyeast 1945 - NB NeoBritannia 2 packets...

    Banana Bread Ale

I intended on three occasions to mimic Wells, and this has been the closest. It was quite good, although after the first four gallons I was ready to be done with bananas!!

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

I'm on board for that, I'm still trying to learn to love single malt whisky one pricey bottle at a time...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Apparently my tastes are not yet properly refined. The reviews were just raving for this one. I clearly didn't understand the style and I focused on the "Red Ale Aged in Oak Barrels" - and missed the significance of "Flanders Style". I was prepared for tart, but not for the complexity that...

How To Wax An Oak Barrel [VIDEO]

Well, not criticizing here, just thinking of pros and cons of various options. I will be using an oak barrel in the coming months. If you wax it then you really can't cut it up later into chips. Which for a cheap guy like me is what I will likely do after about 4 uses. Wouldn't it just make...

    Double DBA Imperial Special Bitter

You're right about the surface area. I realized this after I conceived the idea. About that time I got my wife an age your own whiskey kit with like a very small barrel, maybe 3-4 liters. The directions stated something like that because if the ratio of volume to surface area, that the aging...

    Double DBA Imperial Special Bitter

Cooked this one up yesterday with the help of DRonco. It was thick, ended up with an OG of 1.120. Upon further reflection, it would have been far better to make two 5 gallon batches in tandem, then filled them into the oak barrel after the secondary saving the rest to top off the barrel...

    WhoGarden (hoegaarden clone)

Just went into the primary. Thanks to my awesome 82nd Airborne brother-in-law for funding this one for me as a Christmas present!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just curious, which grain will you use to make this black? I used midnight wheat in a hefeweizen and it was okay, although I swear that it tasted kind of toasty.

    WhoGarden (hoegaarden clone)

Here is a 5 gallon all-grain recipe that I will try: This is not evident by the plain reading of the recipe, but I will prepare the unmalted wheat as a sort of 'hot cereal' prior to commencing the all-grain mash. I may add .5 lb of rolled oats while I'm at it.

So how about unmalted farrow instead of unmalted wheat? I have some on hand, it's light in color, and it could be an interesting experiment. I could just make a cereal of it then add it to the mash. I always make a cereal of oatmeal before mashing it, so this would be not much different.

    Double DBA Imperial Special Bitter

It's not intended to reach an IPA style in terms of hop profile. I will tweak the recipe once I receive the hops to input the actual acidity numbers to come as close as possible to 29 IBUs which is the stated IBU for this beer.

    Double DBA Imperial Special Bitter

I am trying to come up with something similar to the Firestone Walker Double DBA Imperial Special Bitter. I plan on aging this for about 11 months in a used Woddinville Whiskey bourbon barrel. This is a recipe that blends a barleywine and an ESB while incorporating some notes that I have read...

Bananas Foster Creamy Ale (All Grain) **pic intensive**

Just kegged mine. I added 1/2 lb of midnight wheat. So I call it "Midnight in the Garden of Bananas"
