    Growing hops from seed

Do you have any extra seeds? Would you be willing to send some? I could pay for the postage? The hop season has started here in Southern California. My second year plants have broken ground and I am looking to do some hop breeding myself.

Occupying oneself while beer is fermenting

I grow my own hops, so I spend some of my time gardening and researching hop varieties and the science of growing hops. I also spend a lot of time doing recipe design and research. I read a lot of style guidelines. I read about brewing techniques and equipment as well.

    Downy Mildew

Towards the end of the growing season last year I think my plant became infected by Downy Mildew as well. I saw lesions on some of the leaf and some browning on the leaves and cones. I don't have pictures from last season, but I have pictures of my new growth from this season. I've done some...

I only watered my hops 3 times all winter long.

    Hop Growers in Southern California

@Hop Hero Thanks for the pictures. I can't wait for my plant to start growing. @Thaymond Do you have hops in the ground right now from previous seasons? Can hops survive having that much snow piled on top of them?

    Old glass carboy found

I would do as DSorenson says and wash it with some oxy-clean. Maybe let it sit filled with diluted bleach for a couple of days and then rinse it out thoroughly a couple of times and sanitize it with StarSan before using it.

    Flat Bottled Beer Question

If there is some carbonation and yeast sediment at the bottom of your bottle then that means that there is some live yeast. It may have not been enough yeast to fully carbonate the beer in 3 weeks. It could be possible after 4 months to still have enough viable yeast to bottle carb your beer...

Georgia Senate Hearings on 3-Tier / Growlers, ETC

There isn't much mention of how the 3-tier system inhibits competition because most of the supporters of this bill are presenting a moderate stance. The supporters of the bill are pretty much local craft brewers. These local brewers are asking for an exemption to the 3-tier system, but they...

    Hop Growers in Southern California

I'm gonna go look for some barrel planters. I like the way they look. I wish I had more room to just put them in the ground, but I'll make due with what I do have access to. I buried my Centennial rhizome last year with very little dirt. It was extremely shallow. It worked out nicely for me...

First batch of beer, first noticeable mistake - effect?

Haha, I edited out the relax and have a homebrew part because I realized after I posted it that this is still your first batch. I'm sure your beer will turn out fine.

First batch of beer, first noticeable mistake - effect?

Like iowabrew said it does take some time before your yeast really starts fermenting. During that lag time the introduction of oxygen is not harmful. When yeast is first pitch one of the first things they do is start dividing, so that they can reach the cell count needed to complete the...

    Hop Growers in Southern California

I figured that I would need a bigger planter for my hops. The 8 gallon was a just a temporary solution until I could get a bigger planter or find space in the ground. Is it okay to divide rhizomes from my plant considering that I grew it from a rhizome just last year and this is just the...

Harvesting Simcoe/Citra Seeds from Packages of Leaf Hops?

Have you brewed with the hops that you grew from seed? When you grew the hops from seeds did you get any male plants?

    Growing hops in southern california

Hello everyone, I know the hop season hasn't really kicked off yet since we are still in winter, but I have some questions about overwintering hops. I have a second year Centennial hop plant that I started last year in an 8 gallon pot. Are there any special things that you guys do to help them...

    Hop Growers in Southern California

Excellent, I am kinda anxious about my second year Centennials that I started in a pot last year. I hope they survived the winter.

    I'm getting buds already

@Greatlakeshops: That some excellent information. @60sd: From what I read hops will break dormancy when average temperature are above 68 degrees Fahrenheit. I am in southern California and historically that usually happens at the beginning of March. However this year and last year has seen...

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

It is true that the public is looking to grow stuff locally. I also agree that this is a good thing. I have no doubts that there are many individuals out there that are looking to grow locally and create varieties locally. I too am looking to grow stuff locally and start a small scale...

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

I have requested a lot of other seeds from the USDA and they tend to not give any seeds or plants for anything that is commercially available. If you asked for a cascade rhizome there is a good chance that they won't give you one. I asked them for Neomexicana varieties as those are very hard...
