So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

How long should you stratify the seeds for? I have read through a lot of the hop growing forums as well as websites all around the internet. I have seen someone state that germination rates are best at 3 months cold stratification, but I have also seen someone post that 1 week gives the best...

    Falconers Flight Single Hop

Munich needs to be mashed. You would be doing a partial mash with this recipe. Munich malt is similar to base grains except that it is kilned to give it some maltiness. Don't let the term mash intimidate you. Mashing 0.5# of Munich is just like "steeping" 0.5# of Munich at 150 Fahrenheit for...

    Falconers Flight Single Hop

I agree with the guys above about the Caramel malt. I would drop the Caramel down to 0.5#. If you want maltiness you can add a little Munich malt without adding too much more sweetness--maybe 0.5# Munich malt. Another alternative is to use a Caramel that is lightly kilned like Caramel 20. As...

    Brewery doesn't allow mixing beers

As mentioned in an early post, beer is often mixed to make Gueuze. It is also often mixed in the making of barrel aged beers, especially when it is beer aged in bourbon barrels or wine barrels. Older beers are often mixed with younger beers in order to create a flavor profile that might not be...

    2014 Hop rhizome Swap

I could trade maybe 4 Cascades for some Sorachi Ace, Nugget, and Willamette.

Rebel IPA, Sam's West Coast Interpretation

I agree with RichBenn. Some people see West Coast IPA's as just "Hop Bombs" that lack the balance of traditional or American IPA. They see it as a style that lacks the complexity and refinement, but West Coast IPA's can be very sophisticated. The West Coast IPA style might not be a BJCP style...

    Growing hops from seed

That's unfortunate, I would have loved to have one of those plants. Peach syrup aroma would be interesting.

Rebel IPA, Sam's West Coast Interpretation

The bitterness, maltiness, and alcohol does a good job of limiting the perception of sweetness, but in general American IPA according to style can have some sweetness while West Coast IPA tend to not have much sweetness. Hence, the substitution of Munich malt for some of the Crystal / Caramel...

Rebel IPA, Sam's West Coast Interpretation

Dryness is associated with lower final gravity. Dryness can be accentuated with higher carbonation levels as well. Maltiness is flavor that are derived from malts. There is often confusion between the dryness and maltiness because they can be related. Malts can effect dryness. If you have a...

    For New Brewers Wanting Practice

This is a great offer. I have friend that I am trying to get into brewing and I just helped him bottle his first yesterday. I'm gonna refer him to this thread.

Rebel IPA, Sam's West Coast Interpretation

Agreed, dry and malty isn't the same. West Coast should have some malt character without being sweet. A lot of American IPA recipes can be altered to be more West Coast like by reducing crystal or caramel malt and replacing some of it with Munich malt.

Rebel IPA, Sam's West Coast Interpretation

I wouldn't be surprise if West Coast IPA eventually becomes it own style in the BJCP. I think you are on the right track with West Coast IPA being less malty. The rules aren't set in stone, but Mitch Steele the head brewmaster from Stone advises people to make IPAs less malty. The ideal is to...

    Growing hops from seed

Thanks for sending the seeds. I am definitely on the path now to creating a hybrid Neomexicana x HopUnion Cascade Open Pollinated which I greatly prefer over Neomexicana x Humulus eBayus.

    Growing hops from seed

You are right in that its not critical for one to know the lineage. You definitely can just breed hops without having a known male plant. The reason I want to know is so that I can try my best to document the process as well possible and to have as much information as possible. I personally...
