So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

From what I read on here on the forum it seems that germination rates are pretty low. It would be nice to get at least one male and one female. That would make me happy. If I could only pick one I would pick the one male. As that would give me a way to create my own seeds.

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

I've only seen male plants in pictures. Here is a picture that I found on the internet. I have not seen one in person.

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

The Centennial is 2nd year and all of the other plants are 1st year grown from rhizomes. I am relatively new to hop growing. The seeds that DarkCoder sent me were seeds from whole leaf Cascade from Hop Union. I wish I had more space because I'd love to plant a bunch more varieties for my...

    Growing hops in southern california

Here is an update of some of my hop plants. Many of the smaller plants were started this year from rhizomes that I got from Cram here on HBT.

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

I am on day 16 for my hop seed stratification. These are the seeds that DarkCoder sent me. I really hope that I am successful and able to post results. Here is a picture of some of my hops that are currently growing in my yard.

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

Excellent. I am wishing you luck in growing the rhizomes so that you will have more to share with the community in the future. I'd be happy to buy some rhizomes from you in the future. If you run into any male plants in the wild please grab me a rhizome. I would gladly pay for that as well.

    2014 Hop rhizome Swap

Excellent, thanks for the information. I am going to do more research and try to learn as much as possible about the different ways hops can be traded.

    2014 Hop rhizome Swap

Thanks for the feedback. I was just trying to find creative and economic ways to swap hop plants.

    Good introduction IPA?

Once I started drinking IPA regularly Enjoy By quickly became my favorite IPA. I live about 45 minutes from a Stone tap room and its an awesome beer if you can get fresh and on tap. I'm gonna have to try their Go To IPA.

    2014 Hop rhizome Swap

Overnight shipping and refrigerated containers sounds expensive. I was thinking standard shipping and a zip lock bag with a cutting wrapped in a rung out moist paper towel. I was wondering if a bine cutting could survive that kind of abuse.

    2014 Hop rhizome Swap

Anybody ever try swapping cuttings? I have plants that are too young to harvest rhizomes from. I was wondering if anybody had any luck receiving cuttings in the mail and getting them to root? I was thinking we could put a small bind cutting in a regular envelope and that would save on shipping too.

    Good introduction IPA?

I would have to agree with some of the earlier post and recommend Lagunitas. At the local Riteaid store near my house they sometimes sell a 12 pack for $12.99. It's a good all around IPA for a reasonable price and I think its approachable because a lot of other non IPA drinkers that I offered...

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

Is the one of the parents a named variety or are both parents wild?

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

I would like to create some rhizomes from cutting as well. Do you have any tips on how to go about that? Can you take cuttings from side arms or do they have to come from bines that grow out of the soil? How long of a cutting should you take? Is there anything special that you do to...

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

That's what I am trying to do as well. I am trying to grow a male from seeds that were harvested from Cascades. Many of us are working on breeding hops. Check out this thread over here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f92/so-you-want-breed-your-own-hops-464503/

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

Hey grab some extra rhizomes if you can. I would be willing to pay you to ship them or possibly trade if I have something that you might want.

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

Can you explain the process of creating rhizomes from cuttings? How long does it take the cutting to form roots and rhizomes?

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

Hopefully this will be some wild variety. A lot of us here are looking for some wild hops for our hop breeding experiments.

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

I didn't really think of that, but I guess you could graft and perhaps keep a part of the scion portion under a little dirt and get it to become a rhizomes by keeping it covered in dirt. You could potentially end up with a dual variety rhizome. It wouldn't make commercial sense and maybe not...

So...You Want to Breed Your Own Hops.

I don't know if grafting would work, but everything dies back in the fall so if you did successfully graft something it would be just for a season.
