    Reinvigorated Brewer from Illinois

    Everything seems to go in cycles. Welcome back to a neat hobby (tastes great too). Which hops do you think you going to go with, just citra? You'll have to post what you end up with for your recipe.

    Kegging logistics issues

    "So if I went the compact route I could just use that to purge, then transport it and carb it once I get it to the kegerator/CO2 tank?" Reply: You got it! "Totally new to this so it makes me nervous: would I just dispense it for a few seconds, purge, repeat a few times?" Reply: (Co2 is...

    ~~~Now That You've Built Your Keezer~~~
    Built mine about 4 years ago and the only change I have made is to lower my temperature sensor. I'm using a Dwyer/Love controller (great no problems) and at first the sensor was at the top, now relocated 2/3rds down. :)
    Kegging logistics issues
    Purging the headspace of your 5 gallon keg at the remote brewing location: Just buy a compact CO2 cartridge injector system, Super small and less than 25 bucks. *snipped* from an internet supply house = Use this Compact CO2 injector on your ball lock kegs in place of a bulky CO2 tank.This...
    500ml amber flip top bottles
    Trader Joe's in Pittsford, NY has dropped the price on the two Italian beers in 500ml flip lid bottles from $2.99 down to $2.49 each. I thought what the heck, and bought 4 of the Double Dark Malt Ales. (I really like the size and shape of the bottles) :o
    ball or pin lock kegs
    Which is better to use Ball lock or pin lock? Neither is better, I use both. There is no difference in functioning as a beer container. The Keg dimensions are different. Pinlock kegs tend to be 9" diameter and 22 - 23" tall, Ball lock tend to be 8 - 8 1/2" diameter and about 24" tall Of...
    New brewer needs help
    The freshness of your spices in the pumpkin ale could be a factor? Pumpkin/Squash beers really seem to be about: what spices/adjuncts are used, and how much.
    Anyone else out there start with kegging and never mess with bottle-carbing?
    Nope. Not how I started out. I collected bottles, more bottles and even more bottles. Cleaned, sanitized, cleaned, sanitized, more cleaning and more sanitizing. I wanted less cleaning and sanitizing, so I needed bigger bottles so I would have less to clean and sanitize. Bought a crap-load of...
    How do you store your empty kegs
    I'll leave a keg that has blown, dirty and pressurized until I have a good day to clean a couple. When I clean them I like hot water and PBW, then give it 3 rinses, when dry I may just put the lid over the opening, sometimes I'll lock the lid on, but I do not pressurize with air or CO2...
    Another Refractometer Question for Your Collection
    Most likely yes. You will have to subtract 2 from your readings. I use a refractometer and a hydrometer. I love the refractometer best. :D
    Mr. Beer Cowboy Lager - 8 Weeks
    moviepastor, The extra time on the yeast trub should not cause any off flavors. (I'm assuming you just use a primary fermentor) The cidery smell might be from the honey or a slight infection. It can get better though, as it conditions in the bottle. Good Luck!
    yeast
    Nottingham is a great dry yeast and being a little old shouldn't be a problem. What temperature is your wort? If you are cool, it may just be a slow start. If still worried... Go buy a another packet of brewing yeast and pitch it in with the nottingham. Everything will turn out fine.
    Most vigorous airlock activity?
    I should have counted... but I didn't with my Johnny Jump Up Cider. It really bubbled like crazy! I'll have to time my next batch. :D I've had some happy yeast munching on my brews.
    keg lid question
    When you are ready to try again, open bail, re-release the pressure relief valve, bop the lid with the heel of your hand, that should break the sticktion of the lid o-ring to the keg.
    500ml amber flip top bottles
    No cider left at Aldi's.:( Though Trader Joe's has some Italian beer in 500ml flip lid amber bottles ($2.99). 1. Nero's Apecchio Red Ale. Okay beer, not my type, wouldn't buy again. 2. Nero's 1st Century Double Dark Malt Ale. Not me, wouldn't buy again. Labels floated right off in hot...
