    Mash Monitor

Currently I only batch sparge, and I see no reason to change yet since I more or less just started AG and am fairly happy with my process (so far)... So I have little need for flow control besides off and on... For controlling a valve, maybe a servo motor like for radio controlled type stuff...

    Mash Monitor

Looks good.... Should be interesting to see what everyone makes their interfaces look like with the different levers and indicators... For liquid level detection, I plan to use a pressure sensor as described in this app note... I recently ordered 2 solenoid valves, a 1500Watt heating...

    Mash Monitor

I'm an EE by degree, but fell more into the embedded software (automotive) side of things... I really love the idea of controlling 'real stuff' with software/hardware... It could easily be adapted to that, and just slow down the sampling rate to once every 15 minutes or so... I've never...

Should I add some lactose to my recipe at bottling?

As far as I understand, it's just an unfermentable sugar.. So it should sweeten it up.. Maybe adding it during bottling (before adding your priming sugars) gives you the option of sweetening to taste..

44 qt turkey Fryer Kettle Question

Not sure if it's too late, but it's 8-5/8"... I filled the pot a gallon at a time and marked my spoon with each gallon, of course I did that with my SS hose assemby thing, so maybe make it 8-1/2" :)...

Sweet Oatmeal Stout (w/ cinnamon extract?)

I plan on making a sweet oatmeal stout today, the recipe is a slight variation of a recipe from BYO for an oatmeal stout. I really like cinnamon, but my LHBS told me that adding cinnamon would most likely get lost with the hop flavors... So I planned on adding just vanilla until I saw that...

    Mash Monitor

Nah, that would take all the fun out of it... I like tinkering, and I have nearly everything I need to make it, with the exception of the loads (elements, pumps...etc)... Not to mention I can adapt it anyway I need. Besides, I could also just go to the store and buy a 6-pack of beer instead...

    Mash Monitor

Just RS-232... 10k thermistor in series with a 10k resistor. Using a 0-5v for the Vref (10 bit a/d)which can get around .2 degrees accuracy (at the lower temps( <120F)) and maybe 1 to .5 degrees at the higher temps, since it's an NTC thermistor and isn't linear... If I scale it between 100F...

    Mash Monitor

I used Borland C++ Builder to create the app, and just use normal rs-232 serial to communicate with the board, although I'm kinda reading up on USB stuff, that way I could power the board through USB instead of an external power source.. I'm still thinking about adding some relays.. I...

    Mash Monitor

Actually, unfortunately, that wasn't the actual screenshot of it in action, I took that one when I was testing the software out, so I hope I don't lose that much heat either... When I originally tested the cooler, I brought 2 gallons of water to 155 after preheating the cooler with boiling...

    Tapping the finished product

I read a lot of info on this once I got my kegerator cause I ran into the same problem... There were a few different ways people dealt with it... You can circulate the cold are up into the tower with a fan or something.. I started to rig something up, but haven't finished it yet.. I took a...

    Very Cloudy

I always thought that it was because hefe yeast doesn't flocculate fully... From White Labs: This famous German yeast is a strain used in the production of traditional, authentic wheat beers. It produces the banana and clove nose traditionally associated with German wheat beers and leaves...

    Mash Monitor

Right before I started my first AG batch (just finished my 3rd), I dropped and shattered my thermometer, luckily I had a thermocouple probe sitting my car that I borrowed from work (used it to test the coolers temperature loss)... Unfortuantely, my temps were all over the place before I got...

Getting a valve put on my kettle

The direction that come with the bulkhead call out for a 7/8" hole... I bought a step bit from home depot that went up to 7/8... Fit the bulkhead perfectly...

    Deal at Costco

I only did a 5 gal batch since it was my first ag... I haven't figured out what my options are with an 11gal kettle for doing larger batches... I think I'd be happy if I could squeeze 9gal out of it some how..

    Deal at Costco

I did my first AG last week using this... I bought a bulkhead from northern brewer, then some copper, a ball valve and a 1" SS braided hose (cut it in half and made a T) from home depot... Worked great.. It seems pretty solid to me, maybe they just hand tightened the bolts on the display...

    Cooler for mashing...

Thanks for all the responses... I did preheat for about 10 minutes with hot tap water (around 115-120*F). I only used about 3.5 gallons of 160*F water for the test, so maybe the grains would retain heat better too... After the first 10 minutes, and the initial 4*F drop, the drop was nearly...

    Cooler for mashing...

It was at 152.9 after 10 minutes, so that's still a 10 degree drop.. Guess I'll return it.. I was looking at the Coleman Extreme's, but I also ordered a normal cooler bulkhead today from Northern Brewer, and the extreme's need the XL...

    Cooler for mashing...

I just bought a cheap $20 48 qt coleman rectangular cooler to hopefully use for mashing and I decided to do a little test for temperature retention... So I grabbed a thermocouple meter from work, warmed some water to around 160*F and dumped it in the cooler... First measurements in the...
