How do YOU decide what to make next?

I just decide what I want to make and then write down a recipe. But that recipe could change when I get to the homebrew shop where I start tasting the grains. Maybe I will throw in a bit of this. Maybe I will throw in a bit of that. If I have already done a certain recipe and I liked it a lot I...

    What's your favorite beer style?

Newcastle does now come in brown bottles. LOL.

Undissolved extract. Will fermentation dissolve it?

If you do any stirring be sure to sanitize the spoon first. Please update us on how it goes. This will be a learning experience for sure.

Don't wait until secondary to add fruit puree.

Vintner's Harvest puree in a can. 49 oz. This time I added the full 49 oz. because strawberry is a bit of a mild flavor. When I did apricot puree I saved out 2 cups of puree which I then turned into pancake syrup by adding some extra sugar and spices and cooking down. Apricot is a stronger fruit...

Beer sometimes tastes and looks different

By "priming syrup" I meant either dry malt extract or corn sugar dissolved in some water and brought to a boil. Then the beer is siphoned into a bottling bucket after the "priming syrup" is poured in. The beer mixes with the priming syrup and now has something for the yeast to eat so that...

Beer sometimes tastes and looks different

With a proper racking cane it can sit right on top of the yeast because the end that is on it only allows downward flow into the racking cane. So that prevents a whole lot of sediment from getting sucked up. Did you use a proper racking cane?

    Is Secondary Fermentation Necessary/Recommended ??

I agree 100%. I get clearer beer when doing secondary. I probably leave a couple of inches of headspace but the thinking is the same. When I used to bottle the beer there would be very little sediment in the bottles. And now that I prime my kegs it is the same thing but in a keg. I only get a...

    Is Secondary Fermentation Necessary/Recommended ??

I disagree 100%. Being able to taste the beer at that point is a big advantage. It's called "quality control" and is a brewer's first opportunity to get a feel for what they have brewed. I knew that my Old Peculiar Clone recipe was going to be a big hit after I tasted a pint while siphoning to...

    Only StarSan for cleaning?

Generic OxiClean as I said in a previous post. Don't worry, it's under control. LOL.

Undissolved extract. Will fermentation dissolve it?

Also how much time has transpired since you did this? It should slowly dissolve over time. I can't say about your particular predicament since I have never done things this way. I do realize that the instructions that come with the kit may say to do it like that.

Undissolved extract. Will fermentation dissolve it?

So was it a hopped kit? My guess is that once the yeast starts working on the sugars it won't matter much. Dissolving it in warm water first would have been a good move however. I always do a boil, even with a kit. More work but better results. When I have made kits in the past I have done a 15...

    Room Ventilation/Safety

I love when I get that first smell off of the airlcok during some active fermentation. I have to sit down and put my nose right over it and take a big whiff....

    Brewing a 12oz batch

I seem to remember an article about brewing while hiking. Let me see if I can find it. Maybe it was in Zymurgy.

Just be aware that bed bugs are attracted to CO2. That is how they find their prey... LOL.

Undissolved extract. Will fermentation dissolve it?

I take it you used dry extract... Didn't do a boil?

    Is Secondary Fermentation Necessary/Recommended ??

If secondary is done properly one should not be too worried about oxidation. I transfer when there is still some CO2 coming off the beer, right after primary has crashed. That way any oxygen that might be in the small headspace in secondary will be dispensed out through the fermentation lock and...

    Is Secondary Fermentation Necessary/Recommended ??

I still do secondary and always will. Last year I left a batch in secondary for a few months and then primed it in the keg and had it for my birthday. Great batch of beer. Each to his own. I go with practices that give me the results I want. And I will gladly put my beer up against that of...

    Only StarSan for cleaning?

Next time I clean out the keg I will use some PBW or equivalent when I do it. At least then some here can rest easy at night. I have been pretty much ignoring this thread since I have better things to do right now in the midst of a pandemic....

    Only StarSan for cleaning?

And I clearly said "an unsanitized spoon" which you totally ignored in your subsequent post....
