    Another 'Starting A Brewery' Thread?

How about: Bent Shoe: Back Break?

    Another 'Starting A Brewery' Thread?

My buddy and I have been shoeing horses for 14 years. After running through every other name we could think of having to do with the area/gold rush/rural life, and finding them taken, I hit on Bent Shoe. Something undesirable on a horse, but quite quaffable in a glass. :D

    Another 'Starting A Brewery' Thread?

So, between Muddy Creek, and Gilded Goat, there are two good threads on brewery startupping. (If I say it's a word, it's a word.) My question is: do you people want another? I don't want to bore ya, but since things are coming together for us, I can attempt to work my way through Another...

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Yeah, you're in that dark hole of 'can't get there from here' in CA. :D I love riding my bikes around there, but 49 is a tedious 50MPH route crowded with tourists and CHP, and the other routes while amazing to ride, take many more hours. Yeah, we drop in to Knee Deep when we're oot and...

    Blacksmiths show your stuff!

Sorry. Not parting with any of my anvils. (Yes, anvilS, plural :D ) Before you go buy some beat up POS for $4 a pound, be aware they're still available new at around $6 a pound. Unless you find an anvil in good condition, don't get all excited and buy it. I don't remember to take a lot of...

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Apparently they've given up the horses as well. Dratted penny-pinchers have ruined every Superbowl Sunday into eternity. :( Well, say where ya are. I'm sure there's someone, somewhere, in gold country that's selling by the sack. We just got a new place in Auburn recently. I'm all happy and...

    Smoked IPA recipe

Well, you've got a few hints right on their beer page: So some cherrywood smoked malt, (a little goes a long way) some medium crystal, and hops that you think meet the flavors you experienced, is where I'd start. :mug:

Liquor laws. Whats up with that?

No. Getting it back into the bag without the cop noticing, is difficult! If it's out of the bag, you were obviously about to break the law, and you're gonna get your weewee slapped for even thinking about it! :D

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

You order on a Saturday, thinking it'll go out first thing Monday. Nope! Never seems to ship until Thursday, so it takes another week to get to you. I figure they have one part time guy that only comes in on Wed/Thurs to deal with the shipping.

    Reno / Tahoe recommendations?

Another vote for Fifty Fifty. Get their Eclipse aged in anything. Get lots of it. :D

Liquor laws. Whats up with that?

Actually, as of last week, having heard of changes, I'd been told..... nothing changed. I'll check into it.

    GTFO of here!

In this particular instance, I'll stick with organically grown, thankyouverymuch. :D
  15. BentBrewer

Liquor laws. Whats up with that?

Couple of gotchas, for breweries at least: (Disclaimer: This is from a lecture over a year ago, so I might be fuzzy on exact details.) Breweries can't donate product. They can sell at a loss, but no free beer. Breweries cannot deliver product between 7PM Saturday to 9AM Monday. Product...

Adding Clarified Coffee to Golden Stout

As I recall, they were using a sack for the coffee. Probably more for clarity than anything else. A sack probably cuts down on transfer of flavor, but you also don't lose as much product to kruft in the bottom of the fermenter. YMMV. If you think about what it takes to roast coffee, it should...

Getting a job at a brewery

Tell them how much you love to clean. That's what you'll be doing to start. Clean the kegs, clean the fermenter, clean the mash tun, clean the floor... If you're lucky, your experience in mycelium might get you into the lab to help. It's probably not going to be great. First off, they don't...

Need for Local Home Brew Store

Ballast Point started with a homebrew shop in front, and the fermenters in the back. (I'm not even sure they were Ballast Point yet) They might be an informational resource. You might have an advantage starting a shop if it's associated with the local brewery. Due to quantities ordered, they...

Adding Clarified Coffee to Golden Stout

My short notes from the coffee lecture at the California Craft Beer Summit: Add coffee after fermentation. Medium to dark roast, coarse grind. Dial back acidity and type of roast, back off on hops, add alkalinity to mash, back off on roast malts, up the chocolate and sweet malts. Munich...

    Blichmann BrewEasy

What are you folks getting away with for hose lengths? The setup we got has two short hoses that I fear will keep the Towah of Powah :D too close to the burner. I'd like to separate things a bit, but don't want to overwork the pump.
