Is Secondary Fermentation Still Common Practice?

Secondary, (and I use that term loosely) is incredibly handy when you only have two 6.5 gallon fermenters, and four 5 gallon fermenters. YMMV. :D

    New Brewer from Nelson NZ

Welcome! I'm looking forward to 'someday' visiting NZ.

    Old-time Brewery Recipes?

You can also go to one of the online libraries, like Project Gutenberg or Open Library and easily download books that are out of copyright. You might look at The London And Country Brewer, or The Art of Brewing. And as TiredOfBuying mentioned, Ron Pattinson has done a great job of...

Lost Everything ...... Hard drive, not the beer!

In my experience... If you install a new drive, install the OS, and then reinstall the old drive, you can often recover the bulk of the information. Thanks to Western Digital and Seagate, I'm a little too familiar with this process.

    The NAVC Veterinary Conference 2017

Welp. If ya ever make it out to the Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture, we can talk. But no. Not being a vet, I'm not about to fly out to wherever, to listen to lectures on the hemoglobin carrying capacity of of the South African Guttural Toad. :D

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

Paperwork? We don't need no steenkin'.... :D Application to TTB only went off a month or so ago. Mike kept wanting to wait for the permit to operate from the city first, and that kept not happening for a couple months. I assume the application to the state went off at the same time as TTB...

Gilded Goat Brewing Co. - Building a Brewery

Looking very nice! Stay the course!

    Blacksmiths show your stuff!

Today being overcast, it was a good time to finally get a semi-decent picture of the oyster knives. My dad (a retired marine biologist) mentioned a couple years ago that he'd given away his last oyster knife to a neighbor after teaching him how to open them without a resulting hospital visit. :D...

Neat hammer, and an even neater window.

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

Pretty much... no. We had a couple people slated as brewers when the project started, but everything's taken so long that they've gone in different directions. So, for the time being, it's falling to me. That said, I've been home brewing since the early 90's, and for the last year I've been...

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

Ten fermenters, and two brights all in a neat double row. Each tank had 6~8 tie downs on it. I think I have a lifetime supply of the things now. :D

    2-row vs 6-row

If you actually look at a malt bill for modern 2-row and modern 6-row, the extra enzyme power of the 6-row is minimal compared to the 2-row. Probably as recently as 10 years ago, there might have been a bigger difference, but not anymore. If you're using a huge amount of corn, I'd toss some...

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

Sorry. It's in Lincoln. We spent two years trying to get a suitable place in Auburn. After getting s****ed by PG&E on a perfect building we started looking farther afield. We spent three days driving everywhere in the county. Looking at everything that was for rent. Almost nailed a spot in...

    Blacksmiths show your stuff!

Stunning work! And that's the kind of work, that if one is going to do it, one should do. I'd guess however that even at that level of quality, it's hard to get a price that really covers a decent hourly rate. I'll have to pull out one of my oyster knifes, post a picture, and tell the amusing...

    Blacksmiths show your stuff!

I'm always a hyoouge downer when it comes to knives. So take my comments as you wish. :) Unless you're just doing straight material removal, I don't find knife making very worthwhile timewise. You can knock a blank out in about an hour, no problem. But then... You've got to anneal. Then make...

    Another 'Starting A Brewery' Thread?

Okay. Official thread started here. Yes. This was a concern for me, as well as our graphic designers when I found out the marquee had been revived. But according to our lawyers, :D generic images such as horse shoes, anvils, hops, etc are in the public domain and can be used without...

Bent Shoe Brewing: From Broken Backs To Broken Wallets

Dear Beer Nuts, In the spirit of Muddy Creek and Gilded Goat, I'm breaking cover and letting you all in on the effort and bother of trying to make a living brewing good beer. Their threads are how I ended up here after all. So three years ago, (Note that: three years!) my buddy Mike started...

    Blacksmiths show your stuff!

Looking around for a couple pictures of some 'less rough' work, but I'm at a loss. Ah well. I can tip you off to a local guy that does anvil repair. He usually has a couple around for sale, but he's not cheap. Conversely if you hit up one of the bigger CBA events like Spring Conference...

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Safest to make them yourselves. I heard tinfoilhat.com just got bought out by an investment group. /straightface
