How to brew "Green Beer" for Saint Patricks Day

I'm starting some experimentation, and found that 2-3 drops of green food coloring looks great, 2 drops looks more... Irish. I found that 19 drops fit in a 1/8 teaspoon so 3/4 of teaspoon would give me 2.1 drops per 12oz. My plan is to boil 1 cup of water with the food coloring and add that to...

How to brew "Green Beer" for Saint Patricks Day

I'm starting to think that the lack of a reasonable answer to this question has less to do with people disagreeing with the "concept" of green beer, and more to do with people just not having a good answer to the question!

How to brew "Green Beer" for Saint Patricks Day

Getting back on the topic of green beer, I hear everyone's complaints about it, and I get it, but it is a gimmick, and it is something people would like to see. I recently brewed my first AG batch, and ended up with terrible efficiency. I now have 10 gallons of what essentially amounts to Bud...

    Creative ways to cool wort...

I learned this lesson yesterday, spent two hours in the basement trying to push hot water through the hose to melt it. I've been turning the outside water on and off as well. It's amazing how well my new cfc works with 40* tap water. I'm sure it'll be a different story in the summer though.

    MLT too big?

I just wrapped up the second batch, same recipe except I bumped the grains up to 11lbs to ty and compensate for the low efficiency. I literally got the EXACT same efficiency, 48%. I vorlaufed, preheated the MLT took twice as long to sparge, and no increase in efficiency. I have no idea where to...

Learning android, writing recipe formulator app

I like where you're going so far! Couple comments (hey you wanted advice right :)) -The biggest thing I noticed right off the bat was how long it took to load. My phone actually timed out before it loaded the main menu. -When you load a recipe there are no units. I'm sure you're probably...

    Brewzor Quitting?

Anyone know if Brewzor for Android is still under development? I know a couple of months ago he had a blog post on brewzor.com saying he had just moved and was working on a new version. I just reinstalled brewzor on my phone to see if anything had changed, and when I tried to download the...

So true! There are a thousand ways to skin this particular cat...

First AG batch in about a week - correct procedure?

I just did my first batch this way and I think it was a huge mistake. I highly recommend adding the water to the MLT a little hot and waiting for it to drop to the right temperature. You won't have a good idea of how much heat the MLT will suck out of the water ahead of time, so you might as...

DYI vs Off the shelf breakeven point?

This is the logic I always try with SWMBO, it rarely works but oh well. She claims I "tinker" to much with stuff, but that's whats fun to me. I'd rather spend 10 hours building a counterflow chiller so I know intimately how it works, rather than buying one online, paying a couple bucks extra...

    MLT too big?

I've done some more research and this is definitely my plan for the future. I crushed them at the store myself. I've always done this though and I've never had an issue with my steeping grains, although it might not have been as obvious. I was a little worried about over stirring and I also...

    MLT too big?

Pardon my AG ignorance, but is there any reason not to add the water to the MLT first and then pour the grain in? I've always assumed you add the water to the grain. The only reason I would think not too is it could splash around alot. The advantage is I could make sure the water is at the...

    MLT too big?

Yes Tried to hit 154, thermometer read 145 after adding water so I added a little more hot water and it shot up to 160. (I think this might have been my biggest mistake) ...No :( Good idea, I'll do this next time.

    MLT too big?

Went out and got a 5 gallon round cooler, with a stainless steel braid. My efficiency was way down around 48%. I'm going to have to spend some time tweaking things to improve that. Should I have expected that?

    MLT too big?

I think I'm going to go and get a new cooler tomorrow morning and try and make a smaller MLT, then I'll have one for small 5 gallon batches, and one for larger batches...

    MLT too big?

I'm putting together my all grain setup and I'm all ready to do my first batch tomorrow. I used a Coleman Xtreme cooler that I already had left over from a camping trip its a great cooler in good shape. I'm worried however that since its SO big, the grain bed won't be deep enough. I'm using nine...

Getting motor oil out of a keg

I had a buddy cut up my keg last night and we used a step bit to cut the valve hole. I wasn't really paying attention when he started cutting and before I knew it he had dumped about a cup of 5W-30 into my new keg. He insisted that it's no different from cutting oil. When I got it home I...

    Best 2 Tier Setup

I'm thinking about doing a high MLT on my setup. The advantage to me is since I don't have a brewstand, my BK and HLT can be on the ground. I'll pump water up to the HLT and then allow gravity to drain wort into the BK. I only have one burner for now so my plan is to drain wort into an extra...
