Using weight instead of volume for calibrating sight glass

Interesting, I had assumed you'd want to mark for cold temps, but if I really wanted to be anal I could calculate equivalent weight of one gallon at 212 for BK and ~150 for HLT. That way I'd know true values of volume for each vessel at typical operating temps! Told you I was anal :-)

Using weight instead of volume for calibrating sight glass

Water volume will vary based on temperature if I calibrate with volume or weight it doesn't matter, 1 gallon will be different volumes at either temperature no matter what.

Using weight instead of volume for calibrating sight glass

A little more research turned up this which appears to be fairly accurate although different from my previous results: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/water-density-specific-weight-d_595.html Does this look right? My current tap water is about 72° so I'm thinking somewhere around 8.32 lbs...

Using weight instead of volume for calibrating sight glass

So I'm a little anal when it come to calibrating my new sight glass, and I want it to be as close to perfect as is possible. I have a high accuracy scale and my plan is to weight out 1/2 gallon at a time as opposed to measuring it by volume. I have an 8 cup Pyrex measuring cup so I can measure...

    Bobby_M Sight Gauge

Ordered mine and had it shipped to my brew partners house. The idiot took out the sight glass and brush and burned (literally in a camp fire) everything else in the box. Didn't realize he had burned the stickers for marking the tube until we had it installed. I emailed Bobby and he sent me...

What do you do during the mash?

Looking busy is the most important part, wouldn't want to get sucked into doing any extra work...

What do you do during the mash?

+1, but only when it's not 100° like it has been lately. Otherwise we go out for lunch.

    hydrometer broken in sanatizer...did realize

Yeah but I think the question is "why" was the hydrometer being sanitized? I think most people measure gravity in a non sanitized container with a non sanitized hydrometer. Personally I usually taste my sample after measuring so I would never put the wort back in the fermenter, therefore, no...

    Kids and brewing

It always cracks me up to hear parents talk about their children. I'm the youngest in my family and I have 11 (#12 on the way) nieces and nephews and every time my wife and I leave a family function we vow to wait another year :-) We'll have kids eventually but for now, there's no finer birth...

    Whats your efficiency?

I'll definitely bring this up. My LHBS is a great store, and I've read about places deliberately using a poor crush so people buy more grain but I have confidence these guys are just honestly using the same crappy mill they've always had. They've talked about having some guy build them an...

    Whats your efficiency?

I'm more concerned with overall brewhouse efficiency.

    Fermentation

I only get good bubble activity about one out of three brews. Don't worry about it if you never see bubbles. In 5-7 days transfer to secondary and take a gravity reading, if it hasn't dropped at all, by then pitch fresh yeast and hope for the best.

    Whats your efficiency?

Results are in, we milled using a friend's mill, and besides that changed nothing about our process. Efficiency jumped 15 points to 72%. I'd call that a great improvement. Now I just have to see if my LHBS will give me a refund for all of the extra grain I've had to buy because of their horrible...

    Whats your efficiency?

Thanks guys! Youve convinced me I have a lot of room to improve. Next batch I'm going to try a different mill, and see if I can improve. I think I may try another fly sparge as well to see if I can improve there.

    Whats your efficiency?

I crushed it at our LHBS, I have a friend with his own mill and I'm going to see if I can borrow his for my next brew. To try and eliminate this variable.

    Whats your efficiency?

I've been getting what I assume are low efficiencys, but thought, hey maybe with my setup, that's not so bad. So I want to get an idea of what other people are hitting. I know alot is dependent on the brewer but I'm just curious what people are getting with different types of equipment, and...

    MLT too big?

Our grain bill was just under 60% wheat, and no, we did a single infusion. I could see that accounting for maybe a 10-15% drop in efficiency, but I've been hitting in the mid 60's with my efficiency's lately. I can't believe not doing a decoction would drop my efficiency 30+ percentage points???

    MLT too big?

This just got worse... I've switched to Batch Sarging completely at this point and my efficiency has been climbing each brew. Today we did a dunkelweizen. Grain load was 12lbs, and we hit a mash temp of 155 perfectly. I batch sparged twice at 170, and collected just over 6 gallons. We did our...
