Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

We went to fetch 4oz yesterday for a small brew and ended up coming back with four carrier bags bulging. Approx 4-5lbs from a bine that had reddish leaf stalks and another less reddish one on the fence with smaller hops. There were oodles all just about to get past it soon, so we nabbed 'em. I...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

The 15 minute ale went as follows. 474g of Maris Otter malt extract left in the tin 123g of jaggery dissolved first in boiled water (part of the amount below) Filtered water added pint by pint to make the SG go down to 1.040 (by sheer chance was exactly 8 pts). So established the SG before the...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

Yes, all wet hops till the field runs out. I shall go and get some more today from the red leaf stalk, green stemmed bines if i can find them and from the green with red stripe stems if not. You are so fab to be so patient with a beginner. Thank you. I'll read those links and learn first. I'm...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

    checking as my scrawled maths yesterday doesn't make any sense today. 2.77 kg Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 0.26 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 2.77kg/4.16 = 666g 0.26kg/4.16 = 62.5g Added together as MO extract = 728.5g (I used 609g) Therein is a maths error. I then x...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

Yes all fresh hops. Gathered especially for these beers, so in within the pick to use 4 hour slot. The rest are drying now. I'm glad you said that recipe was low in hops because even though I am shocked in general about how few hops are needed in beer, I still thought it felt low. I did a very...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

You have all been so kind and patient. Now I'm very happy as i've just done Mongrel no. 2 (OSH copy from that link, of a sort, using what I had) 1 UK gallon (8 pints) filtered tap water 609g MO extract 63g golden syrup 17g jaggery goor (instead of the demerara as I didn't have any) 9g mongrel...

Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

Sloes and some bullace, but they're not really ready till the first frost. Blackberries are huge this year and plentiful. I make tons of wines but I'm new to beer. The made beers are on this thread.

Finally introducing Mongrel Beer No. 1 Done exactly to IslandLizards recipe (thank you) using 2oz of fresh mongrel hops. 1oz at 30', 0.5oz' at 15' and 0.5oz at 5' Maris otter extract 1.1lb to 1 gallon S-05 yeast Using tap water that had been jug filtered SG was about 1.032 just below the top...

Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

Its fun learning. Mongrel beer is a brilliant name for it. We looked hard and were probably guessing, but we found what appeared to be three types aside from the previous all red. Who knows really? Now time to really make some beer. Scrubbing the containers.

Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

More school of google on the matter and here is a superb article on the fuggle history. I'm going with a friend on a hop picking mission later and we're going to see if we can isolate each seemingly different variety that are in this field and try to see if we can tell any difference with a tea...

Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

W'll go and fetch some of the green striped ones instead. Thank you. (and save the nettles for when they're a bit younger next year perhaps.)

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

You're a flipping gem. Thank you soooo much. I'll get the gear all sterilised and then fetch some more fresh hops off the green striped stems. We went out to dinner last night with some farmer friends and I took some of the MO barley light malt with me for their comments. It turns out they feed...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

I've found a link to a pictorial brew day here. It makes it seem perfectly doable. I'm familiar with many as a winemaker but brewing beer is more fiddle initially. The rest of those hops are drying now because I didn't get it together fast enough, nor had finished the tests before they started...

Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

Only picked the hops from the red striped bines today. The actual hops had a slight red blush where they joined the stem. There were some on plain green stems. I took one end section with a small bump of red shoot so we'll see if it survives.

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

Righty ho. Just finished the boil and the timing and it's cooling with the hops out. Update. The verdict. As it is = far too bitter but still drinkable, just about Glass 1 - 1:1 water and sweetened to 1.012ish = still a bit pokey Glass 2 - 1:1 again and resweetened = still quite bitter but...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

I was just wondering whether to do a mock end game for aroma. The 20 min boil leaves half a pint of bitter brown liquid that is extremely mouth curling but indeed resembles a bitter. I shall boil a kettle now for an end aroma test too and see what happens. For the proper beer do you actually...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

Fetched some more hops today. Armed with some bramble cutters, shears, a large hook and a bucket. We must have looked like housebreakers. We stuck to picking only from the bines with the red stripes. I'll post some more pics in a moment. Retrying the hops fresh a 1oz in a pint of water to see...

Suggestions for a beer to determine and enhance a mystery wild hop

The MO extract has arrived plus four bags of 500g of MO crushed malt barley grains. We have s-04 and s-05 yeast. Five 1oz bags of dried mystery hops in the freezer and whatever fresh hops and fetch just before going for it. (Hop and crab apple jelly got made with the sample). Need to wash out...

Found some wild hops in the UK. Trying to identify them

I love the history part. The railway would have been the Wycombe Railway and in operation c1900 to about 1965. It became the Great Western Railway. I'm now researching what they might have been moving. It was probably limestone, ochre and cut *******. Timber another. I shall go back and...
