Most Recent Results/Findings with SS Mesh Baskets (May 2018)

I've used my 400 micron full mesh basket as a hop filter and found the hops utilization perfectly normal. Some observations though. 1. During the boil steam will get trapped under the basket and cause a surging thumping boil. Can be messy. 2. The 400 micron acts as a pretty robust trub and...

    Auber Instruments CUBE - Review

My experience is that there are more than a few ways to stick a mash while you're recirculating, and in most cases that stuck mash will result in an overheated impeller and a dry-fired element. There are as many or more ways to keep the mash from sticking, but even after finding the "sweet spot"...

EZboil, Power Regulator for Boiling DSPR110

Note: 1. The burst rate will between 1 and 100 pulses for each 100 AC cycles. The pulse width equals to one AC cycle. It is automatically adjusted for 50 or 60 Hz. It is as close to linear as you can get with an on off switch (ssr). I imagine an amp meter would show 6amps. It may burn down...

Do you need a 1 off Stainless part built for your system? Let's discuss it.

I think using a female 1/2 NPT threaded TC cap (your original comment) would be the only way to eliminate interior threads. You could silver solder and grind flush to the threaded end to get a nice sanitary junction. If you used 3/4 TC then a stock 90* elbow is only about 2.5" tall, I'm guessing...

    Pneumatic Bottle Capper - Just...because.

There are no words for this level of awesome! I can't believe how much I missed in this thread after taking a couple days off. I find myself completely unable to look away, every post is like the end of episode cliffhanger that keeps you up till 4am watching "just one more".

    Pneumatic Bottle Capper - Just...because.

With an Edison bulb or two, several brass gauges, a little more brass plumbing, and some leather wrapped handles you'd have a glorious steam-punk contraption.

The Great Gravity Showdown - Hydrometer vs. Digital Hydrometer vs. Refractometer vs...

Great resource, especially for those shopping to upgrade their measurements! I would have to think that the digital refractometer at ~$125 is the most likely upgrade for many. With your experience across all the devices is that money well spent, or is the $350 eDrometer or $660 EasyDens a...

Man, talk about the starts of a lasting legacy... I feel like the @BrunDog condenser is going to become as ubiquitous as the PJ wiring diagram or the Kal panel layout!

    Pneumatic Bottle Capper - Just...because.

You could drop the bottle platform slightly as part of the assembly motion. I'd worry about clipping the top of a bottle if I got some off-spec reused inventory. Cleaning glass is not a fun way to wrap up the end of a bottling session.

Tall, rough around the edges, slightly unstable, several loose screws, and surprisingly heavy?

    Pneumatic Bottle Capper - Just...because.

Possibly my favorite project update of all time! No shame in failed projects, this is a hobby after all. Glad you're still going to finish it, and based on the pictures to date I suspect yeast will be replaced by nano-bots before your materials fail due to use. I think you're golden on the 1800...

School me: Why Electric Brew Over Kettle

You could grab one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W9B1GT2/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 and then watch your kettle boil from your iPad while you're sitting on the porch

Yet another grain mill motor question

With a 1/12hp motor probably a 20:1 reduction, so running at 40-50rpm. You might be better off cranking by hand ;) Most people end up with something like a 1/3hp 1750rpm motor since those are common in washers and dryers. Using a 10:1 reduction you get 175rpm and ~120inch-pounds of torque.

Yet another grain mill motor question

Have you considered this? https://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-Heavy-Duty-Variable-Speed-Reversible-Drill-61741.html If the idea of zip-ties on a drill offends you, the 12v car seat motor is the next cheapest approach:

Yet another grain mill motor question

Sorry Tanstaafb, we got away from your motor in those posts. Yours is an AC motor, should be able to attach a plug to the end of the cord and plug it straight into your power strip. For the pulleys you will get speed reduction equal to the ratio of pulley diameters: 2" on the motor and 8" on...

Yet another grain mill motor question

I'm not sure you'll be able to attach that motor to a grain mill for less than $50. Probably closer to $70 if you don't have a work bench with spare screws, bolts, and parts laying around...

School me: Why Electric Brew Over Kettle

All of these points are great, I can add a couple more: Pros: 1. Reduction of hot surfaces - With gas the kettle, stand, handles, and surrounding area get hot. With electric you still have boiling wort, but everything else is safer to touch. Cons: 1. Obstacles in the Kettle - The element...

Hey Jay, what would the cost be to order this http://www.norcalbrewingsolutions.com/store/Speidel-Ball-Lock-Gas-In-with-Pressure-Relief-Valve.html with a thermowell (30 Liter) instead of the pressure release valve?

    Crazy Ventilation Question

You can put a small window fan in front of the window to push out some of the steam: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Comfort-Zone-326202-Reversible-Twin-Window-Fan-with-Remote/36779699 Brewing a full batch probably puts 1-2 gallons of water in the air. That'd be like a room humidifier on max for 24...
