    Add Coffee ??

There is a new(ish) way to brew cold brew called "Flash Brewed" or "Japanese Cold Brew". The process is to brew coffee normally as a drip/chemex/woodneck/aeropress, except run the hot brew straight into ice where its cooled immediately. This is supposed to give you the benefits of hot coffee...

    The Brown Note Clone recipe

Old post, but looking for the same. From the ATG website: "Caution: so good it WILL make you **** yourself!!!! The brown ale to end all brown ales. Enjoy it, because there is no longer any reason to drink another. You’ve reached the pinnacle. A healthy blend of traditional British...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

Is reduced hop aroma during fermentation normal? The IPA I just did (with some aspects of LODO), has a muted hop aroma in the fermenter. usually when I open it up and stick my head in, my breath is taken away because of the CO2 first, but then there's a good bit of hopiness in the air...

That's what I meant by "the other stuff". What's your opinion on iron leaching from stainless, given my earlier post about Sierra Nevada testing for it?

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I used wyeast nutrient which contains zinc. The german pdf says this is a no-no, but considering brewtan is a metal chelator, I added it anyway, hoping the brewtan would do its job, while adding the other components of the nutrient. I wonder if using brewtan would allow people to continue to...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I'm starting to implement some steps in LODO process. I brewed an IPA last night (90% 2-row, 5% munich, 5% c-60, simcoe for bittering, Amarillo and citra for flamout/whirlpool, dryhop). I did the yeast and dextrose trick (1.6 g/gal yeast & 0.8 g/gal dextrose in strike) for 30 minutes then...

Thoughts on this IPA hop schedule

Or anything else? Just a basic IPA. Brewers friend was calculating 0 min hops with 0 IBU and whirlpool with 4-5 IBUs. Not sure why that is, so the 1 minutes are actually flameouts. Also, shouldn't the lower mash temp bring the FG down past 1.016? American IPA Method: BIAB Style...

All NEW SPEIDEL Stainless add on parts from Nor Cal Brewing

I purchased the pickup arm and top with thermowell and blowoff. Has anyone used the blowoff to transfer with CO2 from the Speidel to a corney?

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I came across something of note while reading up on the new Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest (which is outstanding again)... This is from a guy who works within Sierra Nevada. He states that SN was wanting to do some mini kegs. However everyone they tested had O2 pickup and iron leaching...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

Gotcha, thanks. I'm going to experiment with a basic IPA this week. 90% 2-Row 5% C60 5% Munich Simcoe for bittering and Citra/Amarillo for 5/0/whirlpool/keghop Im looking to used the yeast/dextrose, Brewtan B, and SMB. I'm looking at this schedule for a 3.25 gal BIAB batch (75%...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I came across a quote on a probrewers forum that referenced a paper AJ did. The paper wasn't available anymore (at least at that link) but the guy stated: ..."but I'd consider adding 30 mg of sodium metabisulfite or 35 mg of potassium metabisulfite per gallon of water in your situation. It...

Speidel Fermenter with ALL SS COMBO PACKS from Nor Cal Brewing

Hey Jay, I ordered a thermowell w/blow off and a pickup tube, but did it separately instead of add on. Anyway to still get the discount?

    Solved my oxidation woes

How would one go about bottling a portion of the finished beer? I like to keg the majority, but bottle about 5-10 beers. It seems like kegging the whole thing and keeping O2 down is fairly straightforward with a few ways of doing it (Early ferm transfer with spunding, CO2 fermenter transfer...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but in doing a quick search I didn't see anything. How do you adjust for Na and SO4 in the Brewn Water spreadsheet when adding SMB? Say you add 1.0 grams of SMB to your water. What is the outcome of that if you have 5 gallons of Distilled water in...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I do 3.25 gallon BIAB batches, so 4.50-4.75 gallons of water for the full volume mash. I was getting confused because I saw some recommendations for a mash amount and a sparge amount. I wasn't sure if you just went with the amount of the mash, or if you added the mash and sparge amounts for...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

Nice. I picked up some regular bakers yeast from the grocery store. That's what the experimenter used. It super cheap at about 75 cents for 9 or so grams. He has brewed 3 batches with that and has subbed dextrose for DME. The dextrose is cheaper and only half the amount is used when...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

Premash. Im BIAB so I would treat all my water with the yeast/sugar combo, wait the appropriate time (20 minutes or 15 hours...either amount of time seems like low DO levels). This would eliminate the boiling then chilling step. Add your smb and brewtan, then mash in. This is the way I...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I purchased some Brewtan B from Australia and used it on the last batch. A 3.25 gallon Black IPA that is currently being dryhopped. I tasted a sample before dryhopping and I had almost no hop aroma. Im thinking its a recipe and nylon hop bag problem. The hop bag had liquid in it after...
