Feeling bad about not using my LHBS

I live in Seattle. You'd think the LHBSs would be great here but they're not. There's 4 in the immediate Seattle area but more often than not, I find they don't have what I want and their selections are limited. I prefer online for the selection alone, and the prices are usually better even with...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

I'm at 4 weeks in the primary. If it were more Fall-like I'd keg it now do I can drink it but I'm going to wait another 2 weeks or so.

    What are you drinking now?

Surly Furious clone (NB kit), 6 weeks old. My wife loves the piney aroma and flavor that was too much for me but it's finally mellowing out.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Mashing my Oatmeal Raisin Stout right now. All-grain batch lucky #13 for me. Looking forward to drinking this in the Fall.

    Blichmann Boilermaker Thermometer -Any fix?

I put mine at 4 gallons and that works fine for me and it seems accurate. 3 gallons might be better to place it in the middle when boiling 6 gallons but that seemed too low to me. I use the heat shield and the thermometer never gets very hot even when using the Blichmann burner on full blast. I...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

Thermometer is dead-on accurate (it's a thermapen) and a few other beers have been brewed with it before and since and they're great. And the beer tastes fine, if a little less-bodied due to being so low in gravity, so I don't think it's infected. I measured gravities with a refractometer and I...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

I brewed this 3 weeks ago. OG was 1.074 and used WY1056. I just checked FG for the first time and it's 1.003. 97% attenuation?!?! Can't be right, can it?

    What are you drinking now?

I'm drinking my Fuller's ESB clone and cooking a salmon on the BBQ right after finishing brewing an IPA. Life is good.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just pitched the yeast into my first recipe entirely of my own creation: an English IPA with (too many!) American hops. The hop back was so clogged it took 20 minutes to fill the carboy plus I only ended up with 4.75 gallons – but the OG was exactly right.

    Blichmann Boilermaker Thermometer -Any fix?

You can drill a new hole and mount the thermometer lower and get the Blichmann hole plug kit ($6) to fill the original hole. It's easy to drill a hole with a step bit, it took me 5 minutes. Cheapest and easiest solution: You can also heat more water than 4 gallons even if you don't need it.

    Frequency of Thermopen sales?

I use a thermapen too and love it. My only (small) complaint for brewing is that you can't keep it open for long periods of time because it shuts off automatically. You have to keep closing it and opening it. I wish there was a button to turn it back on.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing my 3rd Fuller's ESB variation batch, 20 minutes into boil now. Going to use a HopRocket to infuse cascade hops into the fermenter instead of dry-hopping. Gotta finish so I can go to my son's preschool graduation. He played with enough cars and trucks to graduate, apparently.

    What are you drinking now?

Northern Brewer's 115th Dream Imperial IPA – my 3rd all-grain batch. Tasty on this hot Seattle day, but 9.6% ABV is is too good.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

My mother-in-law, who drinks Coors Light on special occasions and Keystone Light normally, complained that I don't drink American beers (because I drink craft beers). I tried explaining that her beers are the foreign beers... My dad was surprised I drank so many different beers and said that my...

    What are you drinking now?

Jamil's Evil Twin, my first all-grain beer that I brewed a month ago and kegged yesterday. Good, but not as hoppy as I was expecting given 4.25oz of hops in it.

    Regulator dead?

I just turned the regulator all the way up, down and back up again and that seemed to fix it. I think I heard a quiet pop too, which may have been the check valve coming unstuck (or just my imagination). Thank you!

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

Hmmm.... Looking again, you're right. I misunderstood what I had read about high efficiencies. Thank you.

    Regulator dead?

I have a fairly new perlick regulator, served maybe 6 kegs on it. I just kegged a beer, hooked up the has line to the keg, tried to give it a quick shot of 30 psi to seat the latch and nothing happened and I was getting no gas at all into either keg. It was working fine minutes before and the...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

But isn't it bad to have too high an efficiency? Isn't there a risk of extracting too much bad stuff (tannins?) when you get too high?

    Looking for a good beer

What's ridiculous is that you can't spell "ridiculous" but you think you can fool a brewer who makes good beer but can't figure out how to expand into making money for you.
