    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

This is going on my list of 10-gallon batches.

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

I might be biased since I know the brewer, but I've been sampling this every day for a few days and I think it's the best pumpkin beer I've ever had, except for possibly Pumking, and I am a fan of pumpkin beers. It's got a definite pumpkin flavor, just short of sweet like a pumpkin pie, and...

    Decoction mash with electric rig

I think it should be suspended, not sitting on the element due to the weight. An induction cooktop plate seems pretty good to me. They cost about $100 and should be very efficient. You just need an induction-compatible pot, i.e., steel or iron, not stainless steel, aluminum or ceramic.

    Obnoxious Football Trash Talk Thread

Jennings should've knocked the ball out of the end zone rather than try for a pointless interception. No one asks him about that. Why do we have to pretend that the real refs never make a mistake? And now, if a deal is done, we are going to have to listen to weeks of announcers falling over...

    Decoction mash with electric rig

Depending on the decoction, you can use 2/3 of the grain. If the grain bill is 15lbs, that's 10lbs to boil (plus water).

    Decoction mash with electric rig

Could a hot plate boil 10lbs of mash? It seems like I'd need a very powerful hot plate. What about an induction cooktop plate?

    Decoction mash with electric rig

In spite of the debate about whether decoctions are necessary, this is what is holding me back from going electric. I could use the kitchen burner for decoctions but that means running up and down stairs. I'd prefer to stay in the brewery. Would a double-boiler setup in the brew kettle work...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

At 6 weeks now,I think mine is more pumpkin-y than DFH's Punkin, which, I agree, is a bit subtle (but good!).

    What are you drinking now?

Taddy Porter was one of those beers for me back in '88 or '89. Damn I'm old.

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

Wow, there's a homebrew shop in Port Orchard that has obscure ingredients like rice hulls and I can't easily get WLP002 in Seattle. Go figure.

    Long-term aging questions

Instead of brewing a beer and aging it for 20 years and hoping it's good, I'd brew the beer every year for 20 years to perfect the recipe and then when he's old enough, it'll be great. He can even help you brew it for his 21st birthday. My kids didn't need to wait that long, though. All 3 of...

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

You'll enjoy it. Mine is still carbing but it tastes great without it. Where do you get rice hulls? I can't find them anywhere but online.

    What are you drinking now?

Ommegang Three Philosophers. Yum! Watching Oregon vs Arizona after brewing a Pumking clone.

    Southern Tier Pumking Clone??

I brewed this today, essentially the page 20 recipe. I screwed up with the cinnamon, though: my software doesn't let me enter "3 sticks" of cinnamon so I entered "3 oz" weeks ago assuming I'd double-check it before I brewed. I didn't, being stupid, and put 3 oz of cinnamon in, which is a lot of...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm doing the Southern Tier Pumking clone from this site. It'll be my first rainy brew session.

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

The numbers look close enough to me. It all depends on how much you lose in evaporation when you boil. I lose 17%/hr with a wide kettle, you may lose less. And the pumpkin will absorb some water too. Don't worry about the IBUs. IBU calculations are not accurate because they include too many...

    Best Home Brew Books?

There's inaccurate information on the Internet?!? ;-) The price of everything is equal to its value. The online version costs nothing and the book costs something, so it's not ironic at all that the book is more valuable, it's simple economics. There's no such thing as free beer. :-)

    Why no group buys?

Was this 10 years ago? I live 5 minutes from Bob's Homebrew and it's closer to $2/lb for much of anything. That's if they even have it -- they're usually out of stock or very low, in my experience. I don't know exact prices off the top of my head but when I did the math I was saving almost 50%...

    Why no group buys?

Depends on the grain. I paid about $50 on the low end and about $75 for the most expensive stuff. You basically just eliminate shipping costs compared to online.
