Funny things you've overheard about beer

You have it backwards. Under a monopoly, marginal cost is not equal to price, monopolies can charge much higher prices. You mean the opposite of a monopoly: a commodity. So your theory is that there is a situation where supply doesn't affect the price. So it wouldn't matter if only one bottle...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

You have it backwards. A business can afford to sell a product for the marginal cost to make it so they will continue to do it. But if their costs suddenly increase (hop prices go up) they can't just charge more, they will stop making it or go out of business. You seem to think every consumer is...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Why are they stupid? Because YOU don't value it? Update: the cards actually had $400 on them and also gave other benefits and were sold for $450 by Starbucks. One person paid $1000 on eBay for one. http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/10/news/companies/starbucks-card-ebay/ I bet lots of people here pay...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

The cost to make something is only relevant to how profitable a business is. Businesses can't charge whatever they want for their products, they have to be able to make them for less than what people value them at. Why aren't pencils made out of solid gold and priced accordingly? Because no...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Not if you understand economics. The price to make something has nothing to do with its value. If it did, brewers would be brewing saffron beer and we'd pay $1000 a 6-pack for it.

The Steelers have won 6 Super Bowls, the only team to do that.

If they were good planners they'd have planned it for opposing left-handed and then right-handed QBs. If they were great planners they wouldn't have been caught in the first place.

Just like Ray Lewis does. Hopefully you wouldn't get away with it like Ray Lewis did, though. ;-)

    Tax Cuts for the "Rich"

Yeah! The poor have it so good. My great grandfather came to this country with just a few dollars but it should've been taxed upon entry. He should not have been given the chance to make something of himself. He shouldn't have been allowed to just waltz through school to get an education. He...

New post a picture of your pint

Old Rasputin RIS clone. I bottled this today after a few weeks carbonating in the keg using my new Blichmann BeerGun and I even got my first set of GrogTags today. Good day for beer, couldn't resist opening one after dinner.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

I think this is a common assumption. My parents visited us for a few days this summer and my dad watched me brew a batch of beer. Every time I drank a beer after that he asked me if it was the beer I just brewed. Each time I explained that the beer will take a month or so because it has to...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

It's possible, I guess. Did you notice it being hot or smelling burned? May as well try another rheostat. Out of curiosity, what are the specs on the fan? For what it's worth, a slow spinning stir plate is better than a faster spinning one. I keep mine at 25-30% speed at the most. When it...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Don't know what to tell you then. Maybe you're right and the rheostat is defective, although that seems unlikely if it's new. Or maybe the 10ohm resistor is a 100ohm resistor (translating those color bands can be error-prone)?

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

It probably did, just not enough to notice the difference. Testing my basic understanding of ohm's law.... Let's say your fan is 12V and .5A. To drop the current in half (.25A), you'd need a 48 ohm resistor. Just the 25ohm rheostat cut the current to .48A (12 / 25), so it barely did anything...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Oh, then it doesn't provide enough resistance, it's not defective. Look into ohm's law to figure out how much resistance you need.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Sounds right but the rheostat is probably providing too high a resistance so it stops the fan completely. You can wire in an LM317 voltage regulator to provide more voltage but allow the rheostat to dial the voltage down from the full voltage. This thread has such a wiring diagram. Note that...

Winter Seasonal Beer Jolly Roger Christmas Ale

I took this to a local homebrew fest and others agreed it was a clone of Jolly Roger. I finally got to compare to the real Jolly Roger before killing the keg. It's very close, mine was more hoppy. Even after a month since dry-hopping it, it's got a nice strong aroma. Next time I'll cut all...

    Southern Tier Pumking Clone??

The barleywine was 1.074. So it was smaller than this beer.

    Southern Tier Pumking Clone??

I reused the yeast from a barleywine. I aerated with air + filter, not oxygen.
