Fourth batch - American Wheat (1010)

OK, Bottled the american wheat 1010; a little tart (or sour) I thought -- guess I'll have to wait to see how it works out (especially with the experiment of priming with table sugar 110 gr = 3.9 oz). Plan on buying some Widmer Bros. to see what this should (?) taste like. :mug: -batch

    Should I poke the Krausen?

Are you using a top cropping yeast? I'm brewing an American Wheat with Wyeast 1010 yeast ("a true top cropping yeast" they say). I use a bucket for a primary. After two days I popped the top and saw something similar to this http://www.hbd.org/uchima/yeastzone/topcrop.html So, I poked the...

Fourth batch - American Wheat (1010)

Hi, Just filled the primary with American Wheat (1010), based on the Briess site recipe, http://www.briess.com/homebrew/recipes.shtml, called Wichita Wheat, but with Wyeast 1010 (liq.) for the yeast. * 6.6 lbs. Briess CBW Bavarian Wheat liquid malt extract * 0.5 oz. Perle hops...

Third batch -- a red amber experiment

Hi SteveM, Thanks. The red amber (or whatever;) ) is carbonating on track. There's a good malt taste (like Redhook IPA , strangely, I think), and the bitterness is fading. Even in one day, the malt and bitterness came into better harmony. This _might_ be a keeper, I'll have to wait a few...

Third batch -- a red amber experiment

Hi, The red amber is bottled -- tasted good, definitely hops in there! At transfer to secondary it was a bit bitter, at bottling this had mellowed already. :rockin: -batch

New to list -- mango beer?

Found a thread on the NB Forum with two mango beer recipes: http://forum.northernbrewer.com/viewtopic.php?t=4389&highlight=mango They suggest adding the mango to the secondary and they actually give some reports on the final products too. They used 5 large mangoes. I found one old...

    stick-on thermometers and water

I don't soak mine either, but the stick on gets wet during the bleach rinse off in the tub. I was curious, since I only have one stick on so far, if they are all like that or I got a bad one. I guess I won't give up on them yet... -batch

    stick-on thermometers and water

Looking at catalogs there seem to be two brands of stick on thermometers. One is vertical and one is horizontal (if you put them on normally that is :) ). The vertical one has degrees F and C, the horizontal one has bars that say "Lager", "Ale" as well (got that from squinting at catalogs)...

    better bottles

I don't know what Better Bottles are made of, as far as PET goes, the web site just says they have low oxygen permeability. As far as I know they don't give any comparison to "regular PET" in terms of numbers. Here is everything you want to know about beer bottles that are made of special...

Third batch -- a red amber experiment

Thanks JRGSPE73 for running the calculations and also to Baron von BeeGee for the comments. The "red amber" is bubbling away as the Safale US-56 does its work. If it is hoppy that is good, though I'm not aware of what commercial beer I might be thinking of at the IBU 62 level -- some...

Third batch -- a red amber experiment

Hi All, Just brewed my third batch -- this time I am shooting for some sort of amber. Here's the recipe (5 gals), (sort of based on the amber extract recipe from the Brew Hut site): 0.5 lb crystal 40 0.5 lb crystal 60 0.25 lb carared 3.3 lb can Briess golden light (I wanted to try this...

2nd batch (porter, extract kit) in the primary!

Hi All, A few days ago, I got my second homebrew batch into the primary. Things are bubbling away.:) This one is a porter ("robust porter" from brewer's best, extract w/ grain). Looking forward to the product.:mug: After several annoying attempts to get the siphon going, I think the...

New to list -- mango beer?

Thanks for the nice words. I'm going to put the Mango beer on hold for now (but still do some research on it) while I brew on. Just bottled tonight (this morning), Brewer's Best - kit - IPA, with my beginner kit. I would say the "Ale Pail" for bottling needs some improvement. The...

New to list -- mango beer?

Hello everyone, After a decade, I've gotten back into homebrew with my own equipment. First batch is Brewer's Best IPA. I was thinking, for down the road, has anyone made a mango beer? Any good recipe ideas? :mug: :mug:
