    Question about Bitter Beer

Thinking about going up on the citra for the dry hopping to maybe 2oz and then bottling after 6 days. What is a good BU/OG ration for future reference? I love bitter IPA's so I think I was just having too much fun with Beer Smith!

    Question about Bitter Beer

So my first attempt at a bitter beer (Stone Ruination type IPA) made it down to just about the FG mark (OG was 1.065, FG is currently 1.018) and when I tasted today it was pretty bitter, almost too much so. I was shooting for about 150IBU's which I know is way high on the scale but it was part...

    first time brewer

I was having similar issues with extract beers, I have just made the jump to all grain BIAB and using liquid yeast and yeast starters, my blue moon clone is looking very good (starting on the gravity readings today), and I went ahead and brewed an IPA of my own creation to see what the...

    How to improve my efficiency

So, if I am understanding all the wonderful advice... 1) Double mill is essential to increasing efficiency 2) Sparging, although not required, will give you a few more notches on the efficiency scale 3) Volume measurement is critical, 1/4 gallon incriments are fine but more accuracy is...

    How to improve my efficiency

Can you guys tells me what the best way to sparge is when doing BIAB, I may have a misunderstanding of the process and I want to get it right. I was following the sticky post of how to BIAB and don't see sparging in there. Also, how accurate are we talking for water volumes? My kettle (Bayou...

    How to improve my efficiency

Completed my second BIAB (5.5 gallon) and I ended with an efficiency of 62.25% Aside from getting a better crush on the grains, what are some techniques you pros are using to get better efficiency's? I would like to get to 70%+ efficiency if possible. Thanks!!!!

    First Batch of Brew

Depends on how you plan to carbonate... If you use corn sugar or something similar then make sure your bottling bucket is empty for bottling day!

    First Batch of Brew

Agree'd with leaving it in the primary instead of moving to the secondary/bottling bucket. If you are set on a secondary then I would recommend getting a 5.5 gal Carboy for secondary fermentation.

Should have used a blow off tube...

I just switched it over before D-Day, hopefully I will be ok! This will be SOP from now on!

Should have used a blow off tube...

So I finished my first BIAB last night and got it in the fermentor and with my OG right at 1.049 (target was 1.049) it is now fermenting like crazy! I did a yeast starter for this one as well and I think maybe I should have started with a blow off tube vice the normal airlock. It has been going...

    Stir plate wont work........please help

Had the same issues with my DIY stir plate, had to put in extra magnets and change out the power supply from a 12V to a 6V. Works great now, been spinning since last night, hopefully my house didn't get too cold for the yeasties!

Did I mess up my Yeast Starter?

I made my first yeast starter this evening in preps for brewing a BIAB Blue Moon Clone tomorrow. I am not sure if I messed it up or not, is there any tell tale signs of a screw up or success? I don't want to pitch if I screwed it up and I have a back up smack pack just in case. What should I...

First stovetop BIAB AG Brew - Lessons Learned

Thanks for the info, I am going to do my first BIAB on Thursday, doing the yeast starter tomorrow. I will also be using my newly fabricated wort chiller for the first time as well so it should be an interesting day. Very excited! Going to be brewing a blue moon clone (or so I hope). I was...

    New Brew Kettle Help

I assume that is just drilling a hole in the kettle and then adding the fitting?

    New Brew Kettle Help

I want to go ahead and get a new brew kettle and start brewing using a burner vice inside on the kitchen stove... I have found a couple different options for under 200 bucks but none of them have the installed thermometer... Is it really necessary to have an installed one or is an electric probe...

    Extract pumpkin ale?

I used some Chech Saaz in mine, might go with something a little more spicier next time.

    Extract pumpkin ale?

Try Northern Brewers Smashing pumpkin ale, I made it and changed the steeping grains a tad, came out really good, might add a little more pumpkin spice than they recommend.

Best way to start this great hobby?

That's a lot of equipment! I went with a simpler kit to start with as most of it will work with the All Grain or BIAB stuff. With the electric stove you can do pretty tasty extract beers, but I don't see boiling any more than 2-3 gallons (unless you have a really awesome electric stove!) I...

Adding Cocoa Nibs in Primary vice Secondary?
