    Double Brew Day!

I finally got up the nerve to try two 10 gallon AG batches at once last night. One batch was Haus Ale (first time) and the other was an Amber. I used my 2 tier keggle system and a 36 qt. coleman extreme cooler to mash the second batch. As normal, I heated my "first batch" strike water in the...

10 Gallon AG in a 36 qt Coleman Extreme?

I have a plan...for making 20 gallons instead of 10 during my next brew day:cross:, but it involves mashing for a 10 gallon batch in a coleman extreme 36 qt cooler. Has anyone tried this? I have just about maxed out the cooler capacity before on BIG 5 gallon batches, but I have never attempted...

Insulating sanke for use as mlt

I used a couple layers of the silver faced bubble wrap sealed with aluminum tape on my MLT. It was a bit stinkey the first time I fired it up, but now it works great! It is nice to be able to heat your mash water in the MLT before adding the grain at the start. It is really nice to start...

Kettle False Bottom with All Pellets?

I use all pellet hops and immersion chill, and I have tried a number of different methods of getting the beer out of my keggle. I have tried several types of false bottoms, fine screen collanders, and hose braids. I have gone back to a big siphon because I could never get anything to work 100%...

Labor Day Weekend 2008 - What's in Your Kettle???

This weekend I will be brewing 10 gallons of my 666 IPA. I also just pitched the yeast to 5 gallons of strawberry wine.

what are you using for keggle bottoms/filters?

Ditto. I have been through 3 different types of strainers, including similar to the hop stopper, and they just didn't work with 100% pellets. For the past year, I have been back to the immersion chiller and racking cane after a good vortex, and I dont see myself going back to the valve.

How hard is it to make bad beer?

I decided to design my own stout for my 3rd AG recipe. It tasted like liquid smoke, with some charcoal mixed in, so I dumped it. That was the only batch I have ever dumped. I have had a couple of so-so recipes in the past couple years. ALL OF MY SO-SO RECIPES HAVE INVOLVED THE OVERADDITION...

    2 week brew

This should be no problem for a quick turn-around. I have kegged my UPA after a 1 week primary in a pinch before. In fact, after I finish typing this, I will be kegging a batch of my UPA that I did 9 days ago, and it has an OG of 1.050. For this batch, I fermented pretty hot, mid to high...

    wort chiller necessary?

Ditto. I did the ice bath for a while, then made a chiller out of 1/4" copper tubing. When I made the move to 10 gallon batches, I also needed to make a chiller out of 50' of 1/2" tubing. For me, batch time is important, so I am willing to spend more $ on the chiller and burner btu. It is...

    My efficiency woes

Yep, crushing and lots of stirring, along with a few other secret things, brought me from the low 60's to consistently in the mid 80's in no time. P.S. Check your sparge water temps...

    No Krausen

Yeah, I know.:( I moved from a house with a 50-65 degree basement to a house with a 70+ basement. At the old house I had an old 22 ft^3 broken freezer with a space heater in it. I am afraid I am going to have to invest in a big freezer for this house. But, would warm fermentation temps have...

    All Grain Mash Supplies

JHC that's a pile of money to drop at once for AG! I guess I am torn between buying right the first time, and "wading in". I kind of took the wading in approach for the first 6-8 months of AG brewing. I ended up with two converted coolers (34 and 70 qts), two turkey fryers with pots, and all...

    No Krausen

Actually, I checked tonight, 72 hours into fermentation, and my SG has hit rock bottom at 1.012. At least I hope it has. I am seeing about 1 BPM in the airlocks. The beer started out at 1.050. Any lower than the 1.012 and I am going to start to think that there is an infection or something...

    No Krausen

I have something odd happening right now... I relocated over the summer, I haven't brewed since Memorial Day. Up until Saturday, that is. I brewed a 10 gallon batch of my UP Ale, 2-row, Carapils, Crystal 20 and 40, and a mixture of Magnum, Hallertau, and Amarillo hops. I pitched Safale...

    10 gal batch sparge time

Be prepared for longer sparge water heating times, longer sparge to boil times, longer cooling times, and longer fermenter fill times. For me, a double batch takes about an hour longer than a single batch.

    Direct fire mashtuns..

I used a cooler for 20 some AG batches with good results. I switched to a heated keggle MLT with a false bottom a few weeks ago, and I really like it. When I am not heating my MLT, I keep it wrapped in closed cell foam sleeping mat (Walmart camping section, $6) and a 1" foam cover. I have...

To all grain or not to all grain

Don't do it! It sounds like you are happy with the extract beer that you make. Going AG will only cause you to make more, bigger batches more often for less money and get more enjoyment out of it. In all seriousness, I did 3 extract batches before my first AG batch with the help of "How To...

How long does it take you to AG?

My 5 gallon batches are usually just under 4 hours. I finally got my 10 gallon 2 tier keggle system up and running. My first batch on friday was 5 hours, but I can probably cut out another 15 minutes or so once I learn my new system.
