    Decided not to filter hops

+1!! On about my 3rd batch I had a brilliant idea. I shoved a leg of pantyhose through the neck of the carboy, and poured the beer through it. It turned out to be not such a good idea after all.

My daughter sneezed in the wort!

Do you keg? I would probably keg it after the primary and get it in the fridge quick. IMHO, if it is infected, nothing good can happen in the secondary.

    The Exploding Carboy Club...

I had a 6 gallon slip out of my hands as I was dumping the star-san out. I tried to catch it on the way down, and it broke on the concrete floor in my hands. Luckily the only injury was a 1/4" x 1/8" piece of the outer layer of skin shaved off of a finger. It really got me thinking about my...

10 Gallon brewers: help me brainstorm

I can not imagine brewing 10 gallon batches without my March pump. However, I do not use it for wort transfer. I use and IC which gets 11-12 gallons down to pitching temperature in under 20 minutes. I then siphon the wort to the fermenters. I use the March for moving from the MLT to the...

    fermentation with no krausen?

Interesting. I posted the exact same question about a month ago. I have brewed 4 10 gallon batches since I moved into a new house. All were fermented in 6 gallon carboys. Three of the batches I had brewed before at my old house with the same grain - some from the same 50# sack. The krausen...

    2nd All grain OG question

I had the same thing happen two hydrometers ago. The pre-boil was spot on, and the OG after the boil was way low. I looked closely at my hydrometer and there was a crack running around the circumference right at the lead weight. Before taking the last sample I had dropped the hydrometer the...

    Suggestions for cold weather brewing

In the winter I bring buckets of water out, and run my IC with my March pump fed with cold water from the HLT. I add snow to the HLT to get the temp down as much as possible. After I hit about 120 degrees, I start to recirculate the cooling water back to the HLT which I keep topping off with...

    Holy Fermentation!!!!!!

Yep, I already have ONE. Unfortunately, it was being used by a batch of Barolo that I started the day before I got the plums. I had to resort to using one of my beer primaries.

    Holy Fermentation!!!!!!

I started a 5 gallon batch of plum wine this week with 36# of wild plums, 8# of sugar, acid blend, pot met, etc. in a 6 1/2 gallon Ale Pail. I had fast fermentation after 24 hours, and extremely fast fermentation after 48. When I was punching down the cap after 48 hours and mashing it up with...

Am I becoming an AG Elitist?

Yes, you are becoming an elitist. I call it the extract twang. This is why I started AG. I originally thought it was from the corn sugar in bottling, but I think that it was from the extract. I don't have any extract brewing buddies any more, so I haven't sampled that taste in quite a while.

    Straining bags

Thanks! I figured that $6 for a straining bag was pretty steep for straining $4 of wine.

    Straining bags

If I buy one of the nylon straining bags from the wine store to aid in pressing wine, can I re-use it? I have always used panty hose and want to give a bag a try. Thanks!

    CO2 leaking around fermenter lid?

This is the only thing that I don't like about fermenting in buckets. I have well over a dozen lids, but only 2 or 3 that give an air tight seal. The ones with the o-ring seem to work the best for me. The other issue that I run into is that I can't get the lid off without disturbing the...

    Went all grain today!

Honestly, I can't believe that more people don't brew AG. Once a person decides to do it, it is actually very easy. I was able to participate in a "new" homebrewers club this winter, and I was amazed at the number of people who "brewed from the box". Most of them were impressed by the AG...

    how to filter trub?

I always have the same problem that you are experiencing. It doesn't seem to matter if I whirlpool and wait for 5 minutes, or 30, the last couple gallons are thick with trub. (I brew 10 gallon batches). I have also had a lot of problems trying to strain it out through my spigot. About a year...

How many gallons of EdWort's Haus Pale Ale have been made?

    Brewed 10 gallons last weekend.

2 Gallon Cooler for partial mash

I bought a 2 gallon cooler to make yeast starters with. It ended up being just too easy to fork over the few bucks for DME and not do mini-brew days just to make a starter.

    gelatin finings?

So...a question about gelatin. Will it affect dry hopping? I just added knox gelatin to 2 carboys of IPA that have been dry hopping for a week.

    White pieces in my secondary???

Hey Revvy, How am I supposed to insert that hydrometer thingy into the tube full of wart?

    Double Brew Day!

I would definitely do it again. Probably every time that I brew from now on. 3X is too much for me because I only have 4 primaries and 4 secondaries. I would imagine that 3rd batch would add 1 more hour with my current set-up.
