stainless steel braid, hop stoper for the keggle?

I've seen a SS braid that goes over the end of a SS raking cane. It says to only use it with whole hops. I think it would work, but thats really just a guess.

    What Happened?

Got it. I had read the apendix on hydrometer reading before, but now it makes sense. As with most things about brewing, I read them once to get the general idea then go back and reread to get full compreshension. Must be all the homebrew...LOL

    grain space

Yes, I did a 10 gallon batch. With my system I had to learn the hard way that I loose rouhgly between 1.5 - 2 gallons during my 1 hour boil. I decided to shoot for a 12 gallon volume preboil. I ended up with just over 10 gallons. My first and second runnnings were just about equal.

    grain space

I just did my first all grain this past weekend. I was able to fit 24 pounds of grain with 6 gallons of water and there was still about 1.5 to 2 gallons worth of head space in the MLT. After my mash out, I collected just over 5 1/2 gallons of wort. Put in another 6+gallons in for the batch...

    What Happened?

:off: So what is the optimal temp for taking a gravity reading? I've never really understood the temperature correction that you have to make.

I am just about to batch sparge, and would like some input on the temperature of the first addition of water to bring up my run off volume up to 1/2 my total batch size. 1) What temp should the water be that I add for the first addition? 2) When I am done running off the first volume of...

    Fly Sparging Vs. Batch Sparging

Alright, So I did a bit more reading on the batch sparging technique (Thanks EdWort for posting that info in your recipe). I see that you add an additional water volume before recirculating. However it says nothing about water temperature. Should this initial addition of hot water be at the...

    Fly Sparging Vs. Batch Sparging

Thanks for all the input! I thnk that I will try batch sparging for the first go around. Are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of? My understanding of the method is pretty limited. Here is my basic understanding. 1) You mash for one hour, then recurculate the first runnings...

    Fly Sparging Vs. Batch Sparging

I have all my equipment and ingredients for my first AG batch. I have read quite a bit and watched several videos, but I can't decide weather to do Fly or Batch sparging. I am planning a 10 gallon American Amber ale for my first attempt. Most of the source material I have read says that fly...

    My First Cider

The cherry juice that I used was pretty sweet with a slight tart tang to it. I am hoping that it turns out highly drinkable. If it turns out too tart, I might add some non fermentable sweetner to it when I keg it. Speaking of which, does anyone know if Equal(my favorite sugar substitue) is...

    Edworts Apfelwein

I also used brown sugar as I was not able to find corn sugar in the store, and I didn't want to drive all the way to the LHBS. I also used White Labs english ale yeast instead of the wine yeast. I am hoping for a sweeter rather than drier finish.

    My First Cider

Well, I bit the bullet and put together my first attempt at a cider yesterday. Here is what the recipe looked like: 5 Gallons Apple Juice (No Preservatives) 1/2 Gallon Black Cherry Juice (No Preservatives) 2 pounds Brown Suger 1 vial White Labs English cider yeast I started off by...

    Cider Idea, Your thoughts

DO you use open fermentation for your Scrumpy? I wen to a LHBS a few years ago and the owner had a carboy of open fermenting cider on the counter which he called scrumpy. It looked pretty foul, and had what looked like mold growing on the top of about 5 inches of crystal clear golden liquid...

    Wierd Looking Nut Brown (Help)

I went ahead and kegged it, I sampled it, and while it is not the best beer that I have made, it is not bad. Here is a picture for the morbidly curious. http://weswright.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album02&id=DSCN1307 I know, I know, SBDWHAHB... LOL:mug:
