    Cheaper to buy or brew?

My first 3 all-grains where with-in the span of a week the wife was starting to get annoyed (of course this was after I spent every night and weekend for 2 months building my smoker then brewstand)

    Cheaper to buy or brew?

I'm about where everyone else is, I don't have the distain for BMC that most seem to (a tour of Bud's St. Louis brewery finally got me off my ass to start this obsession). I brew because I love it, well and I'm a project addict and gave me an excuse to build something else. But when asked by...

Recirculation issues that aren't pump related

On Wiz's topic I agree with Catt and would look specifically at the water to grain ratio. Gate valves include wedge and double-disc valves. Both are typically used in a fully open or fully closed position because close regulation of flow is not possible. A gate valve can be used for throttling...

Recirculation issues that aren't pump related

Catt have you tried a globe valve? They provide much better throttling than either gate or ball valves.

    Amerigas/HD tank exchange

Luckily I have an Ace within lazy man walking distance from my house that refills tanks for $16 (this has saved my ass a number of times on brew days) since I discovered this I never do exchanges.

Why are they few self priming magnetic pumps?

More than likely has to do with the tolerances required to manufacture a self priming pump vs those required to make a pump that works and is magnetically coupled. You also have to take into consideration the slip that would be caused by any contact with the pump housing. Basically in order to...

    Couple questions after first AG

I'm using the cheap false bottom from Midwest. Not really worried about it just figured the grain bed would take care of it. O and didn't know if I had done something wrong.

Where is your HERMS temp probe?

I put mine in the water bath after alot of thought the overshoot is what really made me leary of putting it almost anywhere else. Once I auto-tuned the PID I get maybe 1 degree of overshoot and with the temp losses to ambient and less than 100% heat transfer in the HEX I saw almost constant...

    Couple questions after first AG

Ok, so I finished my HERMS ( https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/my-new-herms-179895/ ) on Tuesday and did my wet testing (i.e. brewed a 10 gal batch) on Wednesday. Everything went pretty well, I hit my OG, didn't have any epic failures and other than it taking 6 hours I felt pretty good about it...

    My new HERMS

Yes the blue bucket is to catch the vent from the pumps as well as the drain from the hoses when disconnected and I used an Auber PID temp controller. It is the $41 1/16 Din one sorry don't have the model number on me atm.

    My new HERMS

Just finished my herms build and completed my first all-grain brew last night. Was really pleased with how it went and even managed to hit the OG I was shooting for and actually went over .002. All things considered I'm a pretty happy camper at the moment.
