    Urgent help needed!

Bigger pot over two burners? I used to see copper wash kettles- large oval pots about a foot deep or more. eBay, maybe? Or your big roasting pan, but not if it has any chipped enamel inside, iron/rust ruins beer.

Bottling in 2litre coke bottles - release pressure?

Burgo, good capping practice is to fill the bottle, and immediate place the cap on, leaving it loose. Continue filling/placing a bunch of bottles. In the mean time, some CO2 is coming out of the beer, displacing the air. Then crimp the caps one, in about the same order.

    Dumb Newb Airlock Question

Whiskey or brandy would work too. Won't add much flavor, one ounce in five gallons.

how do I get those disgusting stickers/glue off my cornys??

Heat, like a heat gun or Mama's iron. And scraper/putty knife. Then your favorite spray solvent on the residue- WD-40, Carb cleaner, Goof-Off, stater fluid, gasoline, kerosene.

    where did the wine go?

Are both your primary and secondary the same size, or do you only think so?

    First kumis thread (probably)

I thought lactose was not edible by yeast. Does it use a different 'germ' for fermentation? Or perhaps cheese has .7-2.5 anyhow? Hmm, might account for some of the tang in the Provolone?

    Centrifugal filters? Anybody DIY one?

I can purge the system with CO2, but I'm not degassing either- except via the centrifuge. I'm thinking the centrifuge would fill with CO2 asap. My pear wine had so much lees that i saved some in a gallon jug. It is now about 1/3 clear wine, after two months. The rest of the lees was probably...

    Off Flavors

HBS screwed up? Gave you smoked for "Aromatic"? No way to tell now.

Cost comparison-Extract vs. All-grain vs. Macrobrew

Six weeks after skiing, you have an old lift ticket worth.... Six weeks after a fishing trip, you have two pounds of crappie in the freezer... So six weeks after you have the fun of brewing you have $60 worth of beer. Minus the cost of skis, boots, fishing boat....

    Tap water temp.

I think mine runs about 65. You ought to shoot for less than 90 in your beer. If using an immersion cooler, let it cool longer. If using a counterflow cooler, slow down the beer flow and/or run the water faster. I poke a paperclip wire into my plastic out flow hose where it joins the...

    Primary fermenters...

Do you really think that those die cast plastic parts are so precise they hermetically seal? I've been a mechanic and machinist, and I know how hard it is to make a gas-tight seal, and air locks ain't it. The fluid might act as a sanitizer, but even pure alcohol needs time to kill bacteria...

    Quik Ques?

Mobilian, next thread, it's best to use a subject line that gives us readers a hint at the question. Farts are the release of gas. The gas can be swallowed air, or can be produced within the intestinal tract. Mostly produced by the action of organisms on what is otherwise indigestible. Beans...

    Coopers Carbonation drops

Aww, just add table sugar dissolved in hot water to the bottling bucket before transferring the beer. The transfer will mix the sugar in just fine. You'll get a consistent mix through the batch, and the amount of carbonation is in your control. About 5/8 cup per 5g. Don't even think of...

Permanently marking glass carboy for each gallon?

I picked up a doctor's office scale at auction. It weighs from zip to 350 by 1/4 pounds, and seems accurate all along. I guess it could be called a double-beam scale. Anyhow, I've weighed all my vessels, and recorded that info in my brew log. If I want to know how much of anything, I throw it on...

    Iodine sanitizer?

That's what I've been doing for 24 batches now. Let it soak for 20 minutes. No infections yet. My only problem has been that I started AG with what I thought was a stainless steel perforated screen as a sparge filter gismo in the bottom of a bucket. Later I found out it was tin-plated steel...

    Experimental batch.. opinions wanted

The hops is mellowing with age. It will continue to do so after bottling. Don't even think of dumping it unless it's still tough to swallow after six months erso.

waste of potentially good beer or good idea?

Some guys bottle a couple in screw-top plastic soda bottles. That way you can squeeze one to see how the carbing is coming. And/or some of the 7oz bottles- perrier maybe? Small samples = less waste.

    Iodine sanitizer?

One ounce of household bleach in four gallons is a no-rinse sanitizer. That's two tablepoons- use a measuring spoon, not a soup spoon. I mix up a tub full, brew, and then use it to rinse off the gear before stowing for next tiem. Then leave the bleach mix open to the air for a few days so the...
