    Brewing outside, soot sucks!

I agree w/ duboman. Try lighting the burner w/o the pot on it. Observe the flame for a few minutes. Is there much yellow/orange flame? Adjust the air shutter on the end of the burner where the gas line connects to the burner. You should be able to turn it clockwise/ counter-clockwise to get an...

    magnum and mosiac pale ale?

The recipe I used was developed by a guy at the LHBS. There is some specialty grains used as well. He used ProMash software and according to his recipe this comes out to 150 IBU's. I don't know how the dry hop addition affects the IBU rating but the orig. had 3oz of Citra in place of Mosaic...

    magnum and mosiac pale ale?

I recently did a Citra Pale Ale. Used 2 oz of Magnum at 60 min, .5oz of Citra @ 20 mins and .5 Citra every 5 min after that with 1 oz at flame out. Dry hopped with 3 oz of Mosaic for 7days. Let me just say, this came out AWESOME!. Took some to a local microbrewery where I become friends w/ the...

    Diacetyl rest

Not that I have any experience with this rest or its purpose but I know it is said over and over that taking an FG reading is they way to go. Bubbling isn't gonna tell you if its ready to be kegged if I understand things.

    growing hops

Does that mean that it will just be a smaller yield? Can they be grown on to a Pergola type structure and stay there permanently or as the plant grows over a couple years they would need a taller structure?

My LHBS is Xtreme Brewing in Millsboro DE. Check their website out. Doug, the owner, is the guy with Sam from Dogfish in the pictures in Sam's Extreme Brewing book. They have brewed together and the kits from Xtreme Brewing are direct source recipes. They also have several more Dogfish recipes/...

    Adding coffee to stout recipe

Y'all have got me thinking. I just did an extract version of Dogfish Head's Dark Star Licorice Stout. The licorice flavor comes through as more of an aftertaste. I'm wondering if I could add coffee to this if it would give a coffee flavor more up front w/ the licorice finish. My wife and I like...

    Bottle conditioning questions

Cool, so I'm gonna take the beer now in the controlled 72* spot and swap it out with the freshly bottled batch. Thanks!

    Bottle conditioning questions

Both batches are + 7 ABV. I was thinking that maybe starting off at a little warmer temp would help. My house temp fluctuates alot as we only run the heat when we're home. Will keeping it around 70 or a little higher for the first week aid in carbing the beer or not really? These are my 2nd and...

    Bottle conditioning questions

I have a CPA that has been in the bottle for 7 days at 72-74*. How long do you need to maintain that temp before you can cool it down. I have another beer I bottled tonight that will need to beat the 72-74 temp also and don't have but 1 place to keep that temp. As a 2nd question, will bottle...

    Mosaic Hops rhiozomes

Anyone seen these available? Would they do well in the area of Maryland's Eastern Shore. I know our climate is friendly to hops growing but not sure what Mosaic likes. Also would like to grow Citra. Any ideas?

    Household bottle sanitizer

I believe I read in The Complete Joy of Home Brewing that you can use a weak bleach and water solution to sterilze with. Just be sure to rinse really good.
