    3RD AG - Problems/Tips

Hey, I did my thrid AG on the weekend and thought I would share some things with the forum. Well, with weather around the freezing mark - I had problems with getting some of my temps right. I compensated by adding more water into the mash tun. Also, the amount of steam was...

Who's had an infection? A show of hands.

Not yet..... I've even done the farmer temp test: put my hand in the fermentor to check for "optimum" pitching temp. I would cry if an AG got infected.

Is a good lager possible at 65 deg.?

Here is a link with popular lager yeasts and their recommended temps: http://www.wyeastlab.com/beprlist.htm#lager I personally did 2 "lagers" @ low-mid 50 degrees and both tasted like lagers - not ales. I would try it if you could do high 50's....and maybe try to add a bit more hops for...

Is a good lager possible at 65 deg.?

P.S. Most lager yeast will get a funny/fruity taste to it if it is fermented at a higher temp. Basically lager yeasts are more durable at lower temps where off fruity/off flavours cannot develope as a by-product of the lager yeast. Ale yeasts, respected for fruity notes, are not hardy @...

Is a good lager possible at 65 deg.?

I do not have a fridge/freezer for lagering...but came up with a soltions....a styrofoam wrapped laundery sink with a lid....keeps beer around 50 degrees when I add ice every other day. Try this lnk for something cheap and easy: http://sdcollins.home.mindspring.com/FermentationChiller.html

    New Jersey all grain

What a great idea - that certainly would have helped me on my first AG!

How much grain do I actually need?

Check out and download Promash (trial version), You can play with various combos of grains, adjuncts and hops. It will really give you great ideas (especially when you try inputting recepies and substitute ingredients listed with those you have access to)> Cheers

    Heat and water loss?

I had a similar leakage problem and found I solved it by pulling on the ball valve slightly - this seemed to seal the gap for the most part. The teflon tape sealed when pulled (or pushed in slightly). Cheers.

    Heat and water loss?

The grain will act as insulation as well. I bought a rubbermaid and found it lost heat during a water test similar to yours - and I later thought about the grain/insulation factor. Many people on this forum had great results with the rubbermaid brands. Along with pre-heating, you can also...

FIRST all grain, Fun as hell

Congrats on the AG ! Notes are improtant...put them in good handwriting or on the computer. Its easy to forget what you did a few weeks/months ago. re: Strike water...You can add a bit of hot/boiling water to the cooler (and dump it before adding grain) This will prevent the cooler from...

    promash vs beersmith

Perhaps it has something to do with the units for small differences - types of hops (pellets/whole). The significant margin of error seams to be IBU vs. HBU. Cheers.

Did I fill my bottles high enough?

Looks good - no worries. I varied some bottles over the years - and have not found any difference. I just try to avoid bottles that are less than 85% full.

    Yeast Revival?

:ban: Well. It expanded. After 4 days of nothing - it swelled to the max on Sunday. :ban:

    Sight Glasses ?

:off: I have a 1x2 four foot long piece of spruce. It isn't even cleanly sawed...it was broken over my knee. It has gallon and 1/2 gallon marks etched into it using a dremmel. I had to use roman numerals for the numbering since I only had a cut-off disk. It looks mean - and I like it...

    Yeast Revival?

Ok, so I have a WYeast XL North American lager in my fridge. I will be brewing next weekend. Will it expand? Oh ya, it has a best before date of April 2006. And it was delivered in a heat wave last summer.

Single, Step, or of the Big D

Single for me.....for now. All the grains I use are fully modified. However, one day I will try it out when I try a different type of beer/grain bill. Cheers,

Use it or lose it (yeast)

I actually will get rid of this one....I do have a WY XL N. American Lager, un-used, in the fridge. It has a best before date of April 2006. My ingredients will be here in a week....so if the packge doesnt swell at all, I will make a starter for the dry Saflager-23 that is coming. Cheers.

    I have seen the light

Ya, Many AGers say there is something tangy about extract beer. Then many extract brewers correctly point out that many award winning beers are made from extract. I do agree with you - and that was one of my main reasons for going AG. I tried many kits, and bulk LME and DME but could...

Use it or lose it (yeast)
