New Cooler Mash Tun - Braid or Manifold?

I have the 52 qrt. as a mash-tun and it works quite well. I am getting high 70's -low 80's effiecincy fly sparging - but have been playing with serveral variables this year. Let me know if you want a pic on how I made the manifold fit into the drain groove. Cheers.

Seems like ALOT of water lost during boil

Same thing with me...I lost well over 15% for my first few boils...and then lost more due to the trub......after 6 AGs, I have finally figured out all my equipment. Ease off on the full gas when you start to boil, and you should be fine. Cheers.

Has anyone bottled with soda bottles with success?

Go for it - no problem at all using these. I even reuse the caps. I have been doing this off and on for over 15 yrs. without a problem. Cheers.

Has anyone bottled with soda bottles with success?

If you are talking about priming and adding to plastic bottles - yes, I do it all the time. I really never had a beer last more than 8 months....I did detect a slight loss of pressure after about 7-8 months, but no big deal. Cheers.

    Diacetyl-rest

Thanks for the replies. Boo Boo - It is sweet and I made almost the exact recipe and ended with an Fg of 1.012. I think I'll leave it for another week and may add more yeast from a starter if need be. I am glad I have some cultured WY 2272 in my fridge. Welcome aboard Old Farmer ...

    What Size Chiller?

Tip: Make sure the chiller can fit into your pot. A 50' may actually stick out above the beer level - depending on the dimensions of your pot/kettle. Also, if space is tight, a larger chiller may overflow the pot - or prevent you from whirlpooling. But, all things considered - bigger is...

    Diacetyl-rest

Ok, OG: 1.050 -expected FG of 1.012 using same ingredients/yeast/temps as last batch. Primary: 2 weeks @ 50F. I don't really lager - just primary and secondary @ about 50 and 45 F for a total of 4-5 weeks. Heres the scenario: I racked into secondary after giving a diacetyl rest for...

    Starter problems

Ya, I had a wyeast smack pack that was a year past the best before date....gave it a smack..nothing for 4 days, the it took off. I have used this yeast for 3 beers (recultured) this year. As HB 99 said, give it at 4-5 days before giving up on it. I was about to throw it out - but then saw it...

    Brew on premises?

I have never used one, although had some beers from people who have. I found the beers ok - but that may not be the BOP's fault. When picking up some supplies, I found 3-4 of these places tried to sell the fact that their equipment was the secret to making good beer. I also found that some of...
