    Pilsner malt vs. 2-Row

Thanks for all the info. I will experiment with a all 2-row vs. all pilser this summer. Cheers.

Use it or lose it (yeast)

Ok, I know there has been a ton of posts on yeast washing. I have been through a bunch..but could not figure out the problem below. I have some WY2272 Pilsen taken from my primary that has been in my fridge for about 6 months. It is full of hop leaves. Its smells like yeast - but am worried...

    This freaking rocks!

Ya, I have a 13 or 14 gallon fermentor - and have done a couple of 10 or 11 gallon batches. I think I figured out my capacity and required water levels. I basically start with a higher OG whilst boiling and water it down as I go. It started by accident since I had to dump a couple extra gallons...

    Pilsner malt vs. 2-Row

I am quite happy with the taste and the colour of the 2-row. I may try a 50/50 2-row/pilsner just to see the difference. My supply shop sells 2-row @ $1.50/kg..and pilsner @ $3.50/kg. I guess its time to find a good grain mill to reduce the grain and shipping (by weight) costs. Cheers

    This freaking rocks!

I hope your are watching that carefully. I do 10 G batches and the hops are a real pain.....keep lots of cold water handy...I cannot image a spray bottle will help much. I made he mistake of adding too much cold water in a panic....and had even less boil room a few minutes later. Best of...

    Pilsner malt vs. 2-Row

Hey, I have made 2 AGs (pilsners) so far using 2-row as the majority of the mash. All things being equal (ie -do not need 2-row for helping with mashing rice/corn and similar SRM / points) -is there a big difference between the 2-row and pilsner grain besides the price? Would I get a vastly...

    Perle Advice

Hello, I will be doing an AG summer type lager. I am looking for something with SRM around 3.5 and a ABV of about 5.5...and IBU around 25. I got the grains picked out and was looking for advice for hops. I have used Saaz for pils, tett and haller for lagers...(and cascades for ales). After...

    Fermentation Problem?

Could be many things.....need more info such as carboy or bucket..any gravity readings...was there any foam on top of beer after a few days...temperature of beer when you added the yeast... - your first seal wasn't tight....and the air escaped via another opening. - no water / not enough...

    My first time was great!

Congrats on the brew day...and now the hard part...waiting. Do yourself a big favour and make sure you save some beer to try in 2 months...and some in 4 months. You'll be surprised at how well it matures. Also keep your notes safe...they are very valuable when constructing your own reciepes...

    Temperature Calculators?

Do a internet search for "Promash" or BeerSmith. You can download it for a trial period. It will also help with mash/sparge water temps and volumes. I would recommend having 10-20% more sparge water than calculated ...its a pain to realize you need more..and have to wait for it to heat up...

    Damn beersmith!

Never used Beersmith.....US vs British gallons?
  14. A

Let me know what ya think!

Hey, Congrats on the first AG. I would recommend downloading the trail version of Promash. (and buy it if you like it) You can adjust the grain bills and hops to suit your tastes and your supply. Just select a lager or pilsner for a reference - and then see what you come up with. As long...

    Burner: How does this look?

PS - the price is good, and if the buner is sturdy, you can always find use for the pot for heating sparge water even if you upgrade on the kettle later on. Cheers.

    Burner: How does this look?

Hello, There are two things to consider.... 1) The strength of the weld on this set-up....I saw a photo on this site where one of a similar design buckled. You would have to inspect it first to see if its ok. 2) Size of wort -30 qts = 7.5 US Gallons. If you are going to make 5 G...

    10 Year Break Between Batches

Welcome back.....I returned after a 5 year break. One of the most beneficial changes has been the growth of the internet for our great hobby. I started 15 years ago and just learned from one book back then (Pappazian). Now, thanks to a forum like this, you have so much more info at hand...

    Beer Tasting

Ya magic hat reminded me of eating a bunch of licorice, and then eating a mint after eating sardines. I am glad I tried it - but would stay away from that one. The good news is my pilsner is coming into form. Dead guy was good..but reminded me of something a new brewer would make as an...
