    Peristaltic pumps

By the looks of this one, a fence might not necessary: Greylor Company | Model 200 | Pump manufacture and Distributor It looks like the hose is simply wound tightly around the rollers. If it is wound tightly enough, then the rollers act as the pinch point, but it might not work as well for...

Red Bine? Anyone see this before?

My Mt Hood started off real thick and a little red like yours, but yours being the size of a dime is huge. Mine were about pencil thick. Once they got about a foot high, they started greening up

Fermentation Temp efficiency - water or air?

I am by no means an engineer, but my take would be to use two radiators, one in the fermentation chamber, the other in the kegerator. Once you have it filled, the whole system is sealed, no accidental sloshing of the glycol. One of the engineer types might chime in though concerning the need...

Does any one use a Beverage Cooler for a Fermentation Cooler

    lamarguy uses something similar: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/diy-thermoelectric-temperature-control-27524/index7.html#post873267

Steam injected into copper drain manifold...

do you get any "suck back" in the steam line after you turn the steam back off? I would think as the steam in the line condenses, it would draw wort (or water in your test setup) back into the steam line

Using a refrigerator for fermentation (assistance needed)

You could go with something like this: The Northern Brewer Homebrew Forum • View topic - Fermentation Chiller (Pic's Included) Would allow you to keep using the fridge/freezer as is, and should give you more precision control in a separate fermentation chamber.

    ornamental hops

I want to say I have heard that Sunbeam is used a lot as an ornamental hop. It also will produce cones and has a similar profile to Saaz. I remember reading about a guy on here who got several pounds worth of hop cones from his neighbors ornamental hops each year.

I wish my kids did this well...

Same thing happened to me. I trained up mine on Sunday, and when I looked at them again the next day, they had wound themselves tightly. I scratched my head at first because I didn't remember wrapping them that tightly and some binds I didn't remember wrapping at all!

I know they make heater straps for carboys

I think it might be difficult to efficiently cool a carboy from the outside with a belt if a device existed. Just brainstorming, but what if you made a narrow U out of some stainless steel tubing, narrow enough to fit through the opening of a carboy, then pump cooled glycol through it. That...

    St Arnold's Christmas Ale

Made the extract recipe from DeFalco's about a year ago. It definitely gets better with age. Every once in a while I come across a bottle mixed up in my storage closet or hiding in the back of the fridge and its always a treat! After 6+ months it seems to smooth out, sounds like you made it...

    Bottling Apfelwein

I made a 3 gallon batch and I want to say I used 5.5 ounces of corn sugar. I was going for around 4.0 volumes of co2. I didn't have any bottle bombs and it poured like champagne.

    Raising temp on the cheap

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, tireater, in fact, I was thinking something along the same lines myself. I think I read on here that condensation inside the steam pipes could cause some trembling or thumping when first injecting the steam. Personally, I like things noisy, so the...

    DIY Thermoelectric Temperature Control

I figured I would bring this thread back from the dead with some updates as I have finally gotten around to playing with this. I tried out the plan I had outlined above and here are the results: Built a chamber using 2 sheets of 3/4" foam board glued together- Ugly, but seems to work...

    Fermentation chamber a major flop

+1 I used 2 3/4" sheets glued together and it came out pretty messy. I am thinking the best way to use 3/4" sheets would be to line the inside of a cabinet/locker or something rigid with them. With that said, if you were able to get the 3/4" sheets glued together with an air gap between...

    2009 Hop garden picture thread.

I got mine at lowes. they had them marked at $43 each, but I talked to the manager in the garden center and he sold them to me for $25 each. I have bought a couple a few years ago to make into a fountain and they were only $19.99 each.

    2009 Hop garden picture thread.

Finally took some pictures of mine: Cascade on the Left, Willamette on the Right Mt Hood on the Left, Nugget on the Right For some reason, the Mt hood came up real fast and thick, but have slowed. One of the shoots has even dried up and died back. I water them about every other day...

How long is it taking you to get sprouts this year?

My first year hops took about a week to break the surface. The Nugget, Mt Hood and Willamette are showing really good growth (about 6-8 inches tall, planted about 3 weeks ago). The Cascades had the smallest rhizomes and are about 2-4 inches tall.
