    Sugars lost during the boil

Did you measure both volumes at the same temperature? The volume will decrease as the temperature decreases. I have read the volume is around 4% greater at boiling than at pitching temperature.

    Upside down Therminator?

If you use it upside down the wort and water may not fill every plate, making it less efficient

Boy, did I learn a lot about beer this weekend

That hoppy wheat was really good, but probably would have fit much better into the APA/IPA category. The promoting was a little annoying, the lady with the overwhelming clove saison was really pushing it and handing out peanuts. I swear she must work in marketing.

    Wort Gant

I believe that a grant is used to collect the outflow of the lauter tun to be pumped to the boil kettle. It keeps the pump from putting suction on the grain bed and compacting it.

Boy, did I learn a lot about beer this weekend

I participated in the same event as the OP and came away with the same conclusion. All the beers there were brewed at the same big brew day event so may not represent the brewers best batches, but there were some terrible beers there. I tried to sample as many as I could and found myself dumping...

    Odd personal sanitation practices?

I usually shower every morning, brush my teeth morning and night and wash my hands when needed.

Stopping a hop bine from getting any longer

Yep, cut the tip off and it will put its energy into growing side shoots

    BIAB... plus?

I've been using the same method for a couple years now and I find it works well. I use a 44 quart bayou classic pot with a 32 quart "mash tun" inside. The bayou classic pot has the lip near the top for the steamer basket so I put some stainless bolts through the smaller pot with acorn nuts on...

    Cheap WalMart OxyClean

I used to get that white film on my bottles too after soaking overnight and rinsing with hot water. Then I read the instructions and they say to rinse with cold water. I've found this leaves them squeaky clean with no white residue.

Side mounted Fermentation Chamber - Fridge

Put your hand on the side of the fridge. How cold is it?

    A friendly reminder.

I made the same mistake a couple years ago. After finding that potassium sorbate doesn't kill yeast but keeps it from reproducing I added about a half gallon of wyeast1968 slurry from a batch of beer that was just finished to the four gallons of cider and it fermented slow and steady for about...

    Thinking out loud, kettle whirlpool

I've seen small pumps that you can run with a drill. I wonder if you ran your water through that if it would have enough torque to turn a paddle? It's worth a try - they have one at harbor freight for under $4

    Weird foam

I have the exact same problem with all of my beers. I though maybe it was something in my mashing process, but I also use oxyclean free and starsan on my kegs. I remember hearing in an interview that pbw has a surfactant that oxy doesn't have, so maybe some leftover residue is causing this.

    "Watering" down beer at bottling?

I am far from an expert on this subject, but I have tried this with three batches in the past. I wanted to ferment in a corny to save space so I fermented 4 gallons in one keg. The second keg I purged with co2, carefully poured in a gallon of distilled water that I had boiled for 20 minutes (I...
