    First brew: NB Caribou Slobber

This was a one gallon extract (with a small steeping grain bag) kit from NB. I have a bunch of one gallon carboys and widemouth jars from wine and mead making. Might make sense to brew 5g later on down the road.

    First brew: NB Caribou Slobber

Thanks! Yeah, I have a few more NB kits in the closet to check out (Sierra Madre & Cream Ale). Caribou Slobber is well worth doing again. What rules did I break? 1. Straight LA City tap water, not filtered and no campden tabs. Dodged a bullet I think -- won't be trying that again. Filtered from...

    First brew: NB Caribou Slobber

Haha! Where do they get these names? The beer came out better than the label placement on the bottles. LOL

    First brew: NB Caribou Slobber

It came out very drinkable! Reminds me of Newcastle, but then my beer palate is very limited: Pretty easy kit to get my feet wet (so to speak).

Criticism, constructive or otherwise, is always welcome. Nothing that I say or do at this point changes anything. These are observations to help understand the process, kind of like reading street signs along the highway. I hear you, changing the hop timings is certainly on the table. If this...

    Homemade Bread Thread

A lot of great loaves in this thread. Very impressive! I have been baking homemade (wild yeast) sourdough bread for the past 5 years, every weekend, with Einkorn wheat:

    Make alcohol from store's juice

Yeah, the lack of oxygen and alcohol % make it hard for many of the harmful bugs to survive. Fruit juice wines are the gateway drug to begin doing other brews, mostly because they are pretty easy. It doesn't always make sense to make these types of wines when you can pick up really good wines...

    How did you find us?

I searched DuckDuckGo for BIAB & SMaSH. Folks seemed friendly, knowledgeable and responsive here.

Yeah, he seemed to simplify things in an easy to follow manner. Having now put the wort in the fermentor, I'd say that the process was highly doable and it felt like actually brewing real beer. I tasted the finished wort and it was pretty bitter, maybe the hops are just the first thing to hit...

I'm crazy enough to taste a pinch of malt grains after creating the wort, and took a nibble out of a Tettnang pellet. No bad flavors on the ingredients going in. That said, I wouldn't want to gargle a mouth full of any type of hops. I'm optimistic so far. The wort is on the boil right now. I'm...

Thanks! Yeah, the cool thing about just starting out is that I have no preconceived expectations -- other than I expect this recipe and method to work to a lesser or greater degree of drinkability. I'm not even a beer purist. I like to drink a cold Corona after mowing the lawn, that's about the...

I'm going to stick to the recipe. I can make adjustments based on the flavors later on. It's a one gallon brew to determine if I like this beer. I can make it with different malts and hops on other brews. This will be my starting point.

    Hello From Lake Balboa CA

Thanks for the warm welcome! I hope it's not a requirement for homebrewers to have a wild and crazy beard. Youtube brewers are truly beard serious.

I will be taking a stab at this fairly simple recipe this weekend. What could possibly go wrong besides everything or some little part? This brew doesn't have a name as such, but I assume it to be an ale of sorts. I have all the parts and ingredients ready to go, with one remaining question: I...

    Hello From Lake Balboa CA

Hello all! Just getting started with brewing beer. I've been doing ferments, sourdough bread, homemade wine and meads for a few years now. Why didn't I think of brewing beer sooner? I like beer. :) I've got some Caribou Slobber (Northern Brewer kit) bottle aging right now. Some Hefeweizen...
