First AG Recipe and Brew - Input Please

OK, so tomorrow I dive in to an AG batch. Today I checked my boil loss and figured my final batch size in a 5 gallon brew kettle will be about 2.7 gallons after starting with a 4 gallon boil. Even though it's a little smaller than I hoped, I'm going to use all the grain I have crushed since I...

Picture of Secondary, is anything wrong?

Hopefully with a couple of successes, and some homebrews to relax with, my therapy will be easier. I'm actually thinking about starting some smaller batches just to play with recipes and experimentation. Then I'll have some at all stages and my ADHD will be more satisfied!

    Beer turned darker in secondary

I'm new as well, but experienced the same thing you're mentioning. After a week in the secondary, mine is lightening up, and I'm certain it will look darker in the carboy because of the volume. It looks more like a pale ale now.

Picture of Secondary, is anything wrong?

Thanks, I keep trying to relax, but I am not a patient person, and I tend to worry too much. Brew day for my first AG brew is Monday, and I wanted to head into it confident. The beer tasted great when I checked it before racking. I'll get another carbon soon so I don't have to rack to secondary...

Picture of Secondary, is anything wrong?

This is a picture of my first brew in the secondary fermenter. I transferred it after two days consecutive FG readings of 1.012 which is right on target. I wasn't worried at first, since there was some starsan foam on top after sanitizing, so I thought this was just some left over foam, but it...

    quick hydrometer question

My OG was way off on my first brew as well, using a liquid extract and some specialty grains that were steeped. I got two different readings (one really high, and one really low) for OG depending on where I took the samples. Apparently my wort wasn't stirred very well and the partial boil causes...

    Greetings from Virginia

Thanks everyone, I have a pale ale conditioning now. The Centennial Blond looks good, might have to try that one.:mug: The good news is the mash tun I just finished passed all its tests tonight, so I'm all set to do the AG batch! I'm anxious to see what kind of efficiency I get.

    Greetings from Virginia

Well since my first brew is nestled away in the carboy for a couple of weeks, I thought I'd introduce myself after reading so many threads and posts to get me started. I brewed my first batch using a Brewer's Best kit my wife got me for Christmas. I had been looking at getting started in the...

    New Member First Batch

Like you and I'm sure lots of other folks, my first beer was this year after a Christmas Gift from my wife. I made a couple of small mistakes, but just sampled my beer tonight when I checked the FG. It's an American Pale Ale, and it was delicious! I'm already hooked and have ordered everything I...

    Original Gravity Differences

After a week, it has settled in very nicely. With no more activity showing in the airlock, I went ahead to get a SG reading to see where it is now. It hit the mark with a 1.012 gravity tonight. I'll check it again tomorrow to see if it's done before racking to secondary to condition. The taste...

    Original Gravity Differences

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not too worried, I figure it will still be beer and better yet, it will be beer that I made! Each mistake helps me get better and learn how to make better beer. And next time, I should have a homebrew or two to enjoy while brewing.

    Original Gravity Differences

Well, my first batch was going well until... It was an American Pale Ale kit with LME and the caramel 20 to steep. All went pretty well through the steeping and boil. I cooled it down to 70 degrees, poured it into my primary fermenter (6.5 gallon bucket), and then added some 70 degree water...
