    First brew time!!!!!!!!!!

Shut your blinds and keep an eye out for "the man" while you're doing this nefarious activity.

    A/C Froze up in Texas

So, I come home yesterday to find that the coils in my house A/C froze up and my a/c had been blowing warm air all day. My first thought went along the lines, of "Oh no! My Racer 5 clone is in primary in the spare bedroom". Went I checked on it, the thermosticker said 79 on the outside of the...

    Yeast Slap Pack

+1. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/warning-249579/ I usually smack right as I'm putting the pot on the stove. No need to go all Ike Turner on the packet though.

    Star San in airlock?

I use it in my airlock too. Not only does it foam, but I also get a faint whistle. Beer making should involve all 5 senses.

    dry hopping and contamination

Hops are anti-bacterial. Its what our ancestors used before there was Starsan.

    Warning

Yeah, I pimp-slapped the hell out of it after I guess 1 too many RDWHAHBs. It caused a pinhole in 1 corner that started spurting during yeast wakeup. I pitched it anyway against my better judgement (I was double pitching a high OG brew). I figured there was enough pressure inside to keep the...

    Warning

It is possible to smack a Wyeast packet too hard. Learn from my noob mistake.

How many gallons of homebrew in 2011?

    16131.5 + 5.25 Fireman #4 Blonde Ale Clone + 5.25 AHS Oatmeal Stout + 5.00 NB Patersbier 16,147

    Bottle label removal

Also, I've found, it depends on the brand. Real Ale labels slip right off in hot water, even the glue (those guys MUST be homebrewers). Dogfish Head labels are a cast iron bee-yotch. Thanks for tip on the Oxyclean. I'll give that a try.

The reason its hard to save money homebrewing

I have developed an algorithm which demonstrates that my monetary beer expenditure is constant. As I've gotten into homebrewing, the cost per beer has decreased dramatically, but consumption has increased by the same percentage.

    NB Patersbier...fantastic!

Racking mine to secondary tonight!! Been on primary for 13 days. I can't wait to be sipping this July 4th.

Who has made their oktoberfest yet?

My chest freezer arrives next Saturday. I'll do it shortly thereafter so that it gets a few months to mellow.

I was hooked before tasting my first batch

That's an impressive amount of carbonation for only 1 week in the bottle. I just cracked open one my first on Saturday (a blonde ale) after only a week. I also had some chill haze and it was still flat. Tasted delicious though. How much priming sugar did you add?

My Next Brew - Northern Brewer - Patersbier

I made this last night from the NB recipe. My LHBS didn't have pilsen extract so I used their extra pale malt extract which Im told contains pilsen malt. I did the pre-steep with carapils though. OG was 1.042 and 12 hours later I'm already getting foam from my 7.9 gallon primary bucket...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Shiner Smokehouse. Tasted like they squeezed sausage drippings into it. Also, when I was growing up, there was a regional drug store chain (K&B Pharmacy) that store brand labeled items (i.e. mouthwash, aspirin, etc). Well, they produced a beer that came in purple cans that couldn't have...

Just had my first bottle bomb!!!!!

I wonder if people in higher elevations are more susceptible to bottle bombs. I'm guessing no, if the beer was bottled at the same elevation, but has there ever been anything written about this? MileHigh, you've got me worried. I bottled my first batch this past Saturday and your process...

Bought a 1/2" auto siphon yesterday...

Fenners, wanted to thank you for the tip on the pail opener. Did just like you said and got one at Home Depot for 4 bucks, and that lid popped right off. For the person who said to get the pipeline going, that was epic advice as well. Starting batch #2 (Partial Mash Oatmeal Stout) tonight!!

    Low OG

Took an SG last night (4 days post-pitch) and came up with 1.012. The predicted FG is 1.015. So I took it three more times and came up with 1.012. I was inserting the hydrometer in my thief, and doing the Mr. Miyagi hand roll to make sure the hydrometer wasn't getting hung up on the side of...

Bought a 1/2" auto siphon yesterday...

That's proving to be more difficult than getting that frackin' lid off.
