3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

I don't mean to discredit your experience friend, but I tested this yesterday on my brew and I'm within 1 degree C from ETC and anywhere in the grain bed. It could be that I made a Berliner (1.037) and therefore didn't have a big enough grain bed to cause inconsistencies. I will check again next...

    Berlinner Weisse Starter question

For my Berliners I use two lactic bacteria, one sacch, and then one or two Bretts for keg/bottle conditioning.. One lactic from a bottle from an old Berliner Brewery and the other is an isolate from another brewery that makes Berliners (I believe a sliver of oak from a beam in the ceiling of...

    SS Brewtech Recirc Manifold

That's the same assumption I made as well. I just went to the LHBS and picked up from smaller silicone hosing (3/8" maybe?). You only need a 9-18" depending on the headspace between return port and grain bed. I also wouldn't worry about leaks out the barb. Minor springs from the pressure are...

    Berlinner Weisse Starter question

One is an isolate from a Berliner Weisse bottle found in Germany. The other is a culture swabbed off some surface in another brewery in Germany (I didn't take the sample myself). With a number of blind sensory tests we found most people picked the blend of cultures rather than on their own. I...

    Berlinner Weisse Starter question

If you aren't able to purge headspace, I don't know if the stir plate is the way to go. I like to fill a bottle with wort and minimize headspace surface area (small neck), add bugs and keep at your target temp. Generally I yield heavy growth within 36 hours. Your lactobacilli are probably fine...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

I don't like name dropping the folk I got it from, they don't need any help getting play time. But I looked for alternatives and nothing is steel. Blichmann Auto Sparge attached to a tri-clover fitting with a 1/2" FPT threading so the whole unit can be attached in one go. I am brewing on Friday...

    SS Brewtech Recirc Manifold

I have a brew in a conical system (60L, 15 gallon batch) with a mash colander that sits inside the kettle/conical, and has wort recirculated through it for the mash. I added this manifold to my return system along with an automated valve that is controlled by liquid level to maintain a constant...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

This is my first run with the system. It was clunky to get started to say the least but I will be able to attach SSRs, solenoids, many more sensors (wireless hydrometer is on the list), and store the data on a Raspberry Pi. The reading is from the new thermowell I had made that fits both...

    Caustic/Sodium Hydroxide

ajdelange brings up a good point and one that is worth adding to. it is certainly worthwhile for anyone working with strong acids and bases to invest in the purchase and maintenance of a decent pH sensor. your safety is dependent on the tools you have available to measure your chemicals. thanks...

    Caustic/Sodium Hydroxide

Reviving this thread, I use the stuff too and it's safest to target a particular concentration. I make 5% solutions and I can't see a reason to go more concentrated. Massing out beads of NaOH and adding to liters of water is most accurate. Measuring by volumes (cups, tablespoons, etc) is not a...

    Cooling chiller, glycol system design

With beer I don't mind 32 at all. I've yet to have a freeze, but in terms of water in lines or around an impeller of a pump I agree these should be protected. I am about to build out my chilling system finally and will have to decide how to handle this. I am considering putting the ETC probe...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

I have had pieces made by Brewers Hardware and Brew Hardware. I had a through-wall whirlpool arm made so I can recirculate the wort post-boil through the racking port and into the lid. The exit into the kettle is at a 90 degree turn so you get a ton of movement fully open. My beers have been so...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

No issues with kettle sours in the system if you accommodate the system. Mash, sparge, pitch lacto at 110F and hold until the pH is to your liking (I like 3.3 for tart and 4.2 for subtle sour) then boil and add hops as you would another beer. There shouldn't be any contact with a surface that...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

It looks like a 6" thermowell would sit nicely into the vessel and keeps clearance from the element. I am putting in an order for one to be made withh 1/2" ID tubing to fit both sensors. I don't know how to use the BCS system, it has all looked so daunting to me when I look at the schematics...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

Has anyone extended their thermowell? I am having a new one made that with wide enough to accommodate two sensors (one for control, and one for data logging) and since I can modify the length I wanted to get a feel from others here who have done the same. Anyone got 6"? I know the element...

    Brewpi Woes

Hey all, I am reaching out to this community as the Brewpi is touch and go for answers. Seems there are 5 questions asked for every one that is answered. I purchased a pre-fab brewpi spark and I am wishing I hadn't about now. I have sunk at least two dozen hours into trying to get the script up...

BrewPi - using the new "Spark Core and Photon"

Well, I opted to start with the Brewpi pre-fab. I wanted a turnkey option to get acquainted with. And well, it has been nothing but a headache for the last week. I am trying to get help but I don't even know how to diagnose the problem. I think I installed the program right, but I get a constant...

    In-line yeast injection for homebrewing

I am looking mainly for small volumes of yeast, ~50mL that I can inject into kegs for post-primary purposes. Better still, inject yeast and follow up with dextrose slurry, all pushed with CO2. A hose end sprayer is better than what I had in mind. Let me think on that..
