Proper priming method in bottling bucket?

I had a pumpkin beer that the priming sugar did not mix properly with. I poured the priming solution into my bottling bucket and siphoned from my primary into it. I figured the swirling beer from the siphon tube would mix the sugar in thoroughly. Apparently, I was wrong. The first few...

    Removing labels.. baking soda!

The label can clog it but probably not the glue. Probably not great for the dishwasher though.

Inexpensive Wart Chiller Pump Idea to Share

Hey everyone I figured I'd post back and let everyone know that I tried this about 2 weeks ago using my 25ft copper chiller. This pump doesn't have a crazy amount of flow after going through all that tubing and copper, but it's enough. In retrospect a higher capacity pump would work even...

    Who uses tap water?

I use charcoal filtered tap water and boil 2 gallons of it for topping up the wort. Seems to work just fine.

    First time cold crashing

I'm cold crashing for the first time. I have my carboy in a mini fridge but can't get it to maintain a temperature any higher than about 30-31 degrees F without it turning itself completely off. In the future I want to strip the guts and build my own chamber or at least use an STC-1000 but...

    new to brewing! Equipment suggestions?

I started off with a basic 5gal kit. Had I known then what I know now. Specific Gravity tester Carboy with Brew Hauler Spare air locks Auto siphon Bottle drying tree or something equivalent for cleaning and sanitizing bottles Immersion chiller, even better if you can afford a decent 120v pump...

    Oxy-Clean Free

I thought I bought the perfume free stuff a while back and just the other day I realized it has a lemon smell when I open the container but when mixed with water I don't smell anything at all.

    Removing labels.. baking soda!

Oxyclean all the way. I soak them overnight and the labels float off and the glue is completely dissolved. Some of the Southern Tier labels don't seem to use a cheap glue. For instance, their Pumking labels I have to use acetone to get the glue off after removing the plastic label. Not a...

    Question about Pumpkin Beer

It's normal. I used about 4.5 pounds of canned pumpkin in a 5 gallon batch. I lost about 1.5 to 1.75 gallons of beer to the trub at the bottom of the primary. I had a hangover so I couldn't bring myself to taste it when going to secondary but it smells awesome. I'll let you know in about a...

Inexpensive Wart Chiller Pump Idea to Share

So, I hooked up the pump last night to my 25ft copper immersion chiller and I'm a little disappointed with the flow rate. Disconnected from the chiller the pump puts out a pretty impressive amount of water, but after going through all that tubing it loses quite a bit of it's oomph. If...

    Pumpkin Ale Problems

Thanks. If I'm not tasting the spices coming through I will throw some more in the secondary.

    Pumpkin Ale Problems

I made the same exact kit this past weekend but I used 75oz of pumpkin, and added 1/2 cup of turbinado along with triple the amount of spices they give you plus, all spice, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, etc. My gravity was 1.060. It smells great coming out of the bubbler, and I'm sure I'll have a...

    Thermometer

I use a glass floating thermometer but it can be a pain to read and I'm afraid one day it may slip out of my fingers and smash into the bottom of the kettle. I'd love a digital one that could stick to the side of the kettle but have a floating sensor that could dip down into the wort.

Inexpensive Wart Chiller Pump Idea to Share

Here you go. I just picked one up and it's a large sucker. I like that it has interchangeable hose barbs though. I could use it for stuff other than my immersion chiller. It was hard to find in the store, they had it on a shelf under their large air compressor display, easy to miss. They...

    pumpkin ale questions

Fingers crossed. It's bubbling away in the primary right now and then I might transfer it to secondary for a bit and then cold crash it to try and get it as clear as possible with my limited hardware.

    Steeping grains

Dang, you learn something new every day. Is it bad to squeeze the excess water out of the grain bag when finished steeping, or just let it drip and then throw it out?
