    I love my workshop.

That looks like a nice 'happy place'. I will eventually build up to something very similar. I figure I will gradually build up my brewery and kep adding and enhancing my own area. It looks very well equiped and nicely organized.

    Why You Brew

I really enjoy preparing and cooking a special meal. I get a sense of satisfaction knowing I used fresh wholesome ingredients and took the time to prepare something I enjoy and something I can share. I really like the nuances of the meal I prepared (adding an extra sprig of thyme or browning...

    First Brew Suggestions?

I've never ordered anything off of them, but I ave read good things about Midwest Supplies (dot com). I prefer my Local Home Brew Store, because I'm a NooB and they are cool there.

    First Brew Suggestions?

You can call me an assbag Toot. I can take it, I have thick skin. I like the self depricating humor and good natured ribbing that members here seem to embrace on this board without people getting their panties in a bunch. How can you get upset with a bunch of people talking about beer...

    First Brew Suggestions?

At the risk of sounding like an assbag, why not brew your favorite type of beer? There was one recipe that has been well recieved on this board and I just made it, the Caramel Cream Ale. You could click the link in my signature if you like the flavors in it, it comes highly recommended by me...

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

Well apparently the beer gods were looking down on me 10 days ago. I made the error that started this thread (boiled my specialty malt), fermented for a week (not the recommended two weeks if not using a secondary) and bottled my Caramel Cream Ale on Sat. (3/31). I decided to test one out...

Holy Kraussen Batman. What type of beer r u brewing there?

    Using bottled water to brew.

I just boil the snot out of my tap water the morning I am planning on brewing and I store 3 gallons or so in my primary. Then when I am ready to brew I keep a couple gallons of boiling/sterile water handy while I fire up the brew kettle. In the brew kettle I use tap again figuring I am about...

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

I'm always willing to listen and accept any advice someone with more experience can offer. If I have a bottle bomb, I will think about this post. :o I thought the 1-2-3 rule was always in effect (and I was just taking out the 2).

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

No I bottled after a week. I had considered a secondary, but the clarity of this one is not that important to me. Oh I realize I dogged a bullet here. I do consider myself lucky and this is a mistake I will never make again.

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

I am fine making mistakes as long as I learn from them. Fortunately the beer wasn't affected, but I wil always remember to steep now. I really enjoy this board, the people are helpful and not EACs.

    Beginner question

I recently made a batch of beer that required steeping of carmel malt and I boiled it. Apparently if you boil specialty malts instead of stteping you will likely cause the tannins in the husks to give your beer an astringent quality. Luckily the beer I made had a ton of vanilla in it so the...

    Brew Kit?

I don't know if this suggestion helps but I got an intermediate kit and I just finished my first batch. I told myself I would start adding and upgrading when I had made six batches just so I know I am going to stick with the hobby. The chiller (after reading posts here) I think I am going...

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

As promised, I am updating the progress of this beer and it appears david_42 you are right. I bottled the batch yesterday and despite the flatness of the beer the flavor was pretty nice. I think the vanilla has taken over any issues I may have had from boiling instead of steeping the caramel...

    starter question

If someone has time: Can you explain how to wash yeast? I have a batch in my primary now... would I rack my primary and just rinse the trub or is there more to it than that? I used Wyeast (I think was the name), the smack pack yeast and it is crusing in my primary. Do you only keep...

    How long?

Is it always necessary to use a secondary (or clearing/brightening/finishing tank)? Or is it mostly for clarity, presentation and/or enhancing flavor characters? The reason I am asking is because I have read some threads here that have eluded to people bottling directly from the primary.

    Cost and Commitment

I just started brewing last Saturday and I went to my local Home Brew Store. I simply asked for a beginner's kit and it cost me $65. There was a primary (5 gallon bucket), a bottling bucket, siphon, hydrometer, bottle capper, bottle caps, bottle brush, stick on termometer and sanitizer.

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

Yes I added the caramel malt 15 minutes into the boil and I did a full hour, the caramel malt was in the boil for 45 minutes (although I turned down the heat because it looked like it would boil over a couple times). It was the only added malt (1 pound Caramel 60L) along with some hops. It is...

Oh no, I boiled my specialty malt

OK... I am in the process of making Cheesy's Caramel Cream Ale and I boiled my caramel malt, will there be anything more than a color change and dryness from tanins? Is this batch of beer going to be ruined? I ended up putting the Caramel malt in about 15 minutes into the boil and recent...
