Finally setting up my "brewery" -- some questions though

awesome. thanks for the info. and as far as a dip tube goes just realized i had a 1/2 stainless elbow. that and a chore boy and forget about the bazooka. i should have maybe a cup of wort left in the pot after draining this way. hooray beer!

Finally setting up my "brewery" -- some questions though

i'm already looking how to fabricate a dip tube -- 1 1/2 gallons is a lot to leave behind, both in terms of wort and money. it's a decent drip. i would say i probably lost maybe over a 1/2 cup in 15 minutes.

Finally setting up my "brewery" -- some questions though

so i live in an apartment in new york, so i'm a little tight on room (and very envious of those with patios, porches, garages, yard, brew huts, etc). Anyway, I just finished my heatstick, got 10 gallon pot, drilled some holes, attached a spigot, bazooka tube, sight glass and thermo, but I...

    Forum favorite: Infected?

So didn't want that to be the answer! But yeah. That stuff is six ways from digusting. It tasted so good when I racked it onto the spices! The smell is still with me. I just zested a lime to try to get it out of my nose.

    Forum favorite: Infected?

Went to keg my christmas ale. Been in secondary for three weeks on top of some fresh grated nutmeg and cinnamon. Probably should have mixed those spices in with some vodka or something. But I didn't. Anyway, opened the fermenter and saw the following pics. Smell was extremely...

safeale us-05. used to be us-56. apparently it's the same as wyeast 1056 and white labs 001. also supposed to be the sierra nevada yeast. but you can't believe everything you read online now.

co2 filling up the chest freezer?

thanks man. yeah, it's probably a slow week. keg has been hooked up for 2 weeks, it had some pressure on wednesday, but i don't know how much exactly. i got a massive headache when i put my head down into the chest to pull something out which is one of the things that led me to check into it...

co2 filling up the chest freezer?

should have realized it on wednesday when i was pulling some pints and turned off the gas since it was carbed but no beer came out so i threw the gas back on to dispense. all the other valves on the distro line have been off all week long so looks like somewhere the keg has a bad seal. was...

    Hopsdirect!

get a food saver. i broke my pound bags up into 2 ounce vac packs and it takes up probably 75% less space. plus they're vacuum sealed so they'll stay fresher longer.

    Chilling With Lid On

i have never covered while chilling and the only infection i've had is from dropping a dirty dish towel into the beer as i was bottling. figured the booze would kill anything in it, but nope. entire batch was horrible. but yeah, 20 some odd batches with never a covered chill. then again i'm...

Splitting 5 gallons into 2 different boils

i have to do this since my stove stucks. two pots, four burners. it's not very difficult though, just portion your hops out proportionally to the amount of wort in each pot. also, get one started 15 minutes after the first one unless you have the ability to chill both at the same time. or go...

    Where to get 09 hops

+1. buying hops for $15/pound (less than a dollar an ounce) instead of $3/oz ($42/pound) is awesome, but only if you can store them well. of course my wife is convinced i'm dealing drugs out of our freezer now...

    Critique my porter!

good idea with the chocolate vs black patent and the hops reduction. i'm using the amber and brown since they're "traditional" in an english porter and i got 'em kicking around. although i have a bunch of crystal and munich on hand. ****, i should brew two half batches. one with...
