Judging is very subjective. I have always entered the same beers/ciders in different competitions. I take what the score sheets say from one and adjust the category for the next. As an example, I entered one as a Pale Ale that didn't place and the comments were that it wasn't hoppy enough...

You can! I took a 3rd place ribbon in my first competition and a Silver medal in my second competition with an extract kit, a plastic bucket, and a 5-gallon pot. By the next year, I changed to a large plastic 20-gallon cooler, 11-gallon kettle, and plastic 5-gallon buckets, taking a 2nd place...

For mine, I used 2x6 cut to match the actual size of my freezer, 1x12 raised higher on the outside of the inner collar and 6x2 insulated foam on the inside. I used thick insulation foam for the collar to sit on and more on top of the collar for the original lid to seat into.

This! I only buy in bulk, vacuum seal them in needed quantities, and store than in a dedicated freezer. Some have been there for as long as 2 years with no noticeable changes in aroma or taste.
