    Amazon Hops

Having worked at an Amazon warehouse, I never advise anyone to buy anything that should be refrigerated or stored in a cool location. The warehouses are extremely hot locations. Food stuffs are stored improperly near other items, IE: baby formula, cookies, crackers, etc. stored on shelves below...

    SMaSH West Coast Pale Ale

I've liked using Great Western American Pale Malt. It's a 3L malt, so it gives a nice golden color, it also gives a little more of a backbone to the taste. That said, I agree with those above that offering it as a Denali SMaSH would probably get better sales and reviews. A WC IPA is more...

What does it take to win a homebrew competition?

I had to dig up a 7 yo score sheet... His comment was "Not a fan of this particular beer, it is unpalatable and not in style for an IPA. Perhaps not using dark malt would improve this beer." This was for a Black IPA, otherwise known as a Dark Cascadian Ale. If he didn't know what he was...

What does it take to win a homebrew competition?

Good luck! Take the information from the score sheets and learn what is expected from those judges. If you don't place but get decent feedback about style and taste, brew it again next year for the same competition and utilize their critic. I took a 3rd to a 2nd that way (subsequently took 2...

What does it take to win a homebrew competition?

In one competition, when Cascadian Dark Ales were the new brew on the block, I had one that was getting great reviews from 2 local brew clubs and 3 or 4 local new breweries. Score sheets were all over the place. 2 of the 3 judges in that category were from the same brew club and all 3 medal...

What does it take to win a homebrew competition?

Judging is very subjective. I have always entered the same beers/ciders in different competitions. I take what the score sheets say from one and adjust the category for the next. As an example, I entered one as a Pale Ale that didn't place and the comments were that it wasn't hoppy enough...

Award Winning Beer w/Home Brew Equipment

You can! I took a 3rd place ribbon in my first competition and a Silver medal in my second competition with an extract kit, a plastic bucket, and a 5-gallon pot. By the next year, I changed to a large plastic 20-gallon cooler, 11-gallon kettle, and plastic 5-gallon buckets, taking a 2nd place...

Insulating keezer collar - best options

For mine, I used 2x6 cut to match the actual size of my freezer, 1x12 raised higher on the outside of the inner collar and 6x2 insulated foam on the inside. I used thick insulation foam for the collar to sit on and more on top of the collar for the original lid to seat into.

Leave hops in freezer for 5 weeks? Bad idea?

This! I only buy in bulk, vacuum seal them in needed quantities, and store than in a dedicated freezer. Some have been there for as long as 2 years with no noticeable changes in aroma or taste.
