Secondary additions in a beer to be aged

I made a big barleywine sort of beer recently, and the recipe calls for dry hopping with 2oz of EKG and for the beer to be aged for 8 to 12 months. Should I dry hop for the regular two weeks, bottle, and age in the bottles? Should I dry hop for two weeks, rack off it and age it in the...

    Barley Wine Technique

I actually brewed that same recipe two Sunday's ago. I'm pretty sure that my mash tun is big enough to hold the whole grain bill needed, but I had the book and the recipe and the time, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. So far so good, my OG was a little lower than the recipe said I should get...

    co2 Regulator Question

Thanks all! That's about what I figured, just wanted to make sure before I put in something that might not work the same way, read wrong pressures, explode, etc...

    co2 Regulator Question

So I've been putting together a keezer, and the last thing I needed was a co2 regulator. As luck would have it, a buddy of mine had an old one kicking around he was willing to give me. Only problem is, the low pressure gauge is busted. Still seems to regulate co2 pressures just fine, but just...

    Poor Efficiency

We've put in a couple of brews since I originally made this post, and we're still not getting real great efficiency. Here's the last mash we made: 8.8lbs 2-Row 2.2lbs Victory Malt 1.1lbs Crystal 60L 0.5lbs Chocolate Malt Mashed at 65*C (149F) for 60 minutes. Used 12.6...

    Help choose a crush

Put a batch of grain through this last night. I tried to get it to look like the smallest sample from above there, but the rollers are nearly touching at that setting and it became damn near impossible to crank. To put a handful through is no problem. Putting 12ish lbs through it turns out to...

    Help choose a crush

Well, last time I brewed I used a crush somewhere in the middle of the middle two shown here, so I'll try a finer crush next time. Malt conditioning looks like it should be pretty doable as well, I may have to try that at some point too. How drastic are we talking here? A couple percent of...

    Help choose a crush

I've never had a stuck sparge happen before, so I guess it couldn't hurt to try the finest setting. I also lauter pretty slowly most of the time. Basically start the siphon and then set the stopcock so barely a trickle is flowing. It usually takes about a half hour or so to get 7 gallons-ish...

    Help choose a crush

Sorry for the large image sizes, I'm having some amount of trouble getting the on site image hosting to work now, so I had to put them up on photobucket. Here's the coarsest crush. Second coarsest. Second finest. Finest crush. This is my mash tun. Simple copper manifold...

    Help choose a crush

I'm a recent owner of a Monster Mills MM-2, and I'm trying to figure out the crush setting. In this picture I've crushed 4 handfuls of grain at 4 different settings. Starting at the bottom and moving counter-clockwise, the gap was as wide as I could get it, then somewhere in between twice...

    Bulk Hop Varieties

I'm way out on the east coast of Canada, it's kind of a beer hell around here. Last brew day I paid pretty close to $40 for 5 oz of EKG at the LHBS. If I order a few ounces from somewhere online I'm guessing I'll probably pay enough in shipping that it's not worth it not to just go to the...

    Bulk Hop Varieties

The willamette was there because I wanted fuggles. Then I was like, well, since they're both fuggles, I'll probably get US instead of UK, I'm sure I'd be happy with the results either way. Then I figured that since willamette is a fuggles cultivar, as Bob mentioned, that I could probably get...

    Bulk Hop Varieties

Huh, I thought it was one that a lot of people really liked? I guess I'm not really that set on it, it just seemed from reading other topics that a lot of people recommended it.

    Bulk Hop Varieties

I'm planning on ordering 6 or 7 lbs of hops from hopsdirect in the next week or two, and I'm looking for advice on what varieties to order. I'm pretty new to brewing, have a few batches under my belt, but still trying to keep things reasonably simple. I brew about 10 gallons split between...

    Poor Efficiency

Here's an interesting tidbit. We racked them to secondaries last night. Both batches are at 1.005 as of last night, when the predicted FG was 1.013. Does that say anything about efficiency? Seems to be the opposite of what I would have expected.

    Poor Efficiency

I'm not sure. My post boil volume was probably 18-20L or so, because it wasn't very full in the carboy. So my pre-boil volume was probably reasonably close to this, since I boiled with the covers on. (Which we started doing because we wanted it to reach boil faster, we just never stopped...

    Poor Efficiency

Hey, thanks for all the replies! Apparently, I've got some changes to make in my procedure. First, answer some questions. Hardly any? Whatever was left on the bottom of the manifold, or soaked into the grain. The recipe says we were aiming for SG=1.050 and FG=1.013, which I didn't...

    Poor Efficiency

A friend and me brewed a double batch of Orfy's Old Speckled Hen Clone recently. We did the two batches one after the other on the same equipment following the same recipe. Hit mash temps spot on. I forgot to read the recipe and we ended up only mashing for 60 minutes instead of 90. English...
