    First brew plan... Critique

I'm getting worried that I won't be able to cool the Wort down quick enough for a "cold break" to happen. Would it be beneficial to only start with 5 gallons, and then top off to 5.25 with ice to cool it quicker, rather than start with 6 gallons and not be able to cool it efficiently? Also...

    First brew plan... Critique

Good call. I will bring my cooler outside with me and add snow to that while stirring water around. I'm guessing ill have some burnoff and be under 5 gallons at the end so that I can add some ice to top off with, sanitized of course.

    First brew plan... Critique

So I plan on brewing my first beer this weekend. It is an extract brew with specialty grains: Irish Stout kit from Midwest. Plan is to use a 30 quart aluminum kettle (oxidized) to get 6 gallons of water up to 155 and steep for 30 minutes. I will then add the lme once boiling (no late addition...

Great deal on beginners kit though Midwest and Livingsocial.com

It's on a piece of paper on the larger ziplock bag. Also if one of the letters looks like a O it might be a Q. I got the Irish stout with the kit and just bought hanks hefeweizen with the discount. Also there is a code "mek10" possibly (can't think right now) that gets u an additional 10% off a...

A Pictoral how to brew an extract kit.

Question on top off water. If I start with 6 gallonsi, boil off a gallon or so during the boil, should I add top off water into the bottling bucket before aerating it into the fermetner, to have about 5.5 gallons in the fermenter? Or do you shoot for exactly 5 gallons into the fermenter? I...

Getting ready for first brew - Steeping question and more

Great, thanks for the advice. I've exhausted this website for tips, as well as the website with Palmers book. I think I'm ready to give it a shot but I'm still trying to find a deal on a cheap turkey fryer setup.

Getting ready for first brew - Steeping question and more

The kit comes with a hydrometer and also a thermometer to stick on the fermenting pale. I guess I could steep the grains in the turkey fryer, but I have read conflicting opinions of steeping in a lesser amount than the full 6 gallons. Should I steep in say 3 gallons and then add 3 additional...

Getting ready for first brew - Steeping question and more

So I am a week or two away from beginning my first beer, an Irish Stout that came with the Midwest Brewers living social deal. I went on to their website and looked at their instructions and then have been researching for weeks on this site. I think I have it down to what I need in addition to...

What kit should I buy to start brewing?

I also bought this kit. Been kicking myself since they had them around October and jumped on the deal this time. With 2 beer kits, $80 shipped seems like a pretty solid start. I look forward to reading more here and getting in to this hobby. I plan on starting with the Irish stout.
