    Ruined Fermentometer

The trick is, to tape them to your fermenter with some packaging tape, and to REMOVE them, BEFORE you immerse them in water. Oh, if you have a floating thermometer, float it in the larger bucket to check temps. Yes, it will read correctly, even if you have a plastic (bucket) fermenter. steve

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I just checked, my LHBS sells Montrachet yeast for $1.29. (Well, since I work there, I sell it for $1.29, but I couldn't remember the price.) I'd rather clean out the carboy, sanitize it, and pitch new yeast. Now, if you are using a liquid yeast, I can see starting a batch on 1/2 the...

    How to keg?

Yep, just got a used cornie keg, from the boss. Now, all I need is to put the whole rig together. Reefer, free, from landlord. 20 pound (Coca-cola) Co2 bottle, from non-LHBS boss, $7.00. Dual stage, 3 gauge regulator, shanks, faucets, QDs, and tubing, $20.00 from LHBS boss...

Cherries in the Snow - Primary Fermentation

One of my customers did this recipe, and did it in a 5 gallon carboy. Blew the airlock completely off. His "better half" referred to it as "Cherries on the ceiling." Needless to say, she wasn't happy! steve

What do you do for a living?

There's a local guy who does just that. Doesn't use pesticide to kill the bees (at least, not 'til he's gotten the honey) and sell the honey to the local stores. Our store has gotten some, and it makes GREAT Mead! Desert wildflower (urban.) steve

    Cleaning Bottles

Here's a small revision of this method; Use no dishwasher soap, but use a capful of bleach, in the dishwasher. Use the heated dry cycle, like you said. Now, here's the difference. Set your bottling bucket on the counter, right over the OPEN dishwasher, grab the bottles out of it, fill...

Holy Bad Customer Service Batman! Stpats of Texas

Flyboy, I just saw this! THANK YOU!!:mug: It is my personal opinion, that customer service is the best way to improve any business, whether it is a customer who walks in, or one on the phone! steve (Yes, the Steve he was talking about.)

    Firestone VS Cornelius

They're all Cornelius kegs. It is just that some of them were built undel license from Cornelius. Spartanburg, Firestone, and a few others were all contracted out by Cornelius. (In fact, you can see that on the kegs.) Yes, some of them are hard to get parts for. (Try getting parts for a...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

OK, newsflash! I sold 8 Montrachet yeast packets, yesterday, to a guy who is planning on making 8 batches. (Possibly, much more!) He scored some frozen concentrate, each container makes 5 gallons, with 3 containers per case. I think he said he got 10 cases! I suggested that he mix one...

Man, I really don't want to drive back to the brewshop!

If you come to the store I work at, we check EVERY SINGLE carboy, before it ever leaves our store. Even if it is a bubble in the smooth section of the glass, we won't sell it for full price. If it is a real manufacturing flaw, like this sounds like, we won't sell it at all. (Yes, most of my...

    Ferment Temps

I'm going to assume you are in a coastal area, and if such this may not help. You can drop your fermentation temps by 5 or more degrees, by simply placing your fermenter (and that should be a carboy, for mead) in a larger bucket, filling that bucket up with water, and putting a towel or...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Tell me you use dextrose, instead of Malto-dextrine. M-D doesn't ferment out, but at least, it isn't sweet. But, you're going to have some SERIOUS body! steve

Yipes, methinks I'm getting old or something

We get that Flagstaff stuff every so often, and I like it! Almost too much to use in my Mead recipes. R, DW, HAHB! (Or, maybe, a HomeMead!) :D steve

Yipes, methinks I'm getting old or something

RedSun, honey is pretty much a gamble to predict gravity from, since there are too many variables. (Especially, if you use the local Tempe Crockett stuff, which is watered down.) I'd probably add the honey in at 48 hours, to get some alcohol in there to kill any nasties, (which means it will...

    Gas and Beverage tube sizes

The line size for the Co2 doesn't really matter, unless you're planning on dispensing beer commercially. (Like, at the ball park.) Use whatever is cheapest, and fits. Line for beer, well, let's just say, others here have addressed this. It isn't an easy subject. steve
