    for the lactose intolerant?

Guys, (all of you) I'm a Moderator at a couple of Geek fora, and let me just interject here. I like seeing some use of the space-bar, as well as the shift key. Even though this is the WWW, (World-Wide Wait!) any attempt at punctuation and spelling-grammar, is helpful! Yes, some of you may...

    McMaster-Carr Rocks!

Once, I ordered some phenolic rods, that only came in 3 foot lengths. (I only needed 4 or 5 inch pieces.) So, I ordered 3 of them, because they were so cheap. They came in a cardboard shipping tube, about 6 inches longer, with padding in both ends, and wooden plugs. This tube had a 3/8ths...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Happened again! Guy walked into the store, and got 2 pounds of dextrose, so I asked. "Wine?" "Yep." "Apfelwine?" "Yep." "EdWort's Apfelwine?" "Yep." (He already had the yeast.) It seems that this recipe is causing a large underground success, here! steve

YES! my first sack o' grain!

Ed, imported bags are usually 25 kilos, which works out to 55 pounds and change. Domestic bags are usually 50 pounds, which works out to 50 pounds.:D I know this, because I open quite a few bags a week. (50 pound bags will fit in 2, 5 gallon buckets, and the imported stuff requires a 5 and...

    McMaster-Carr Rocks!

I have 3 or 4 diverse hobbies, and so far, all of them have had tie-ins with McMaster-Carr. #1, overclocking computers, and cooling the CPUs in them. Pumps and cooling lines, and other hard-to-find hardware. #2, restoring old power tools. (Specifically, old Shopsmith ER machines.)...

Ending Primary ferm. early to keep FG up?

Your FG is determined (all else being the same) by mash temps. If you want to raise the FG, (again, all other factors being the same) raise your mash temps a couple of degrees. If you try to rack over early, the fermentable sugars are still going to ferment, and you don't want an...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

To address your first, could SWMBO be allergic to dextrose or glucose? Corn sugar is the same as these 2. The 50 pound bags, that I bag down, at LHBS say "Dextrose Monohydrate," and I'll wager this is the same stuff that other HBSs use. Dosn't say anything about corn, at all. If your...

    first mead-- yeast question

If it a dry (powdered) yeast, it is a wine yeast. Those are made for up to 6 gallons. You're fine using 1 packet. steve

    first mead-- yeast question

How much mead are you making? If you are doing 20 gallons, use all 4. If you are only doing a 5 gallon batch, one package will suffice. (You could probably get away with using 4 packs for 25 gallons, though.):D steve

    Santizing in the dish washer

This is the method the boss recommends. I don't use it, no dishwasher. steve

5l mini keg- how do they work?

It isn't DE in an acetylene tank, but the acetone that is soaked into that DE. They used to use cotton balls, instead of DE. Acetylene dissolves into the acetone, and comes out of suspension, when you open the tank valve. Well, I guess I was somewhat wrong. It is a different porous filler...

I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this...

If you can, BEFORE you pour, hook up your Co2 bottle, and run in some gas. For at least 10 or 20 seconds. That will replace the oxygen with Co2, and possibly (maybe) reduce your chances of oxidizing your beer. It wouldn't hurt to leave the Co2 line hooked up, and give it a few random blasts...

    Any Clampers here?

I'm going to agree with this evaluation, too. Since there are other chapters "at large," perhaps a chapter here wouldn't be a bad idea. TxBrew?? What about it? :fro: :mug: steve

What do you do for a living?

I've got 2 part-time jobs; #1, working at the LHBS. Pay isn't all that good, but look at the fringe benefits. (Mr LHBS guy, can you test my homebrew, and tell me what's wrong with it? Me, your whole batch's gone bad. Bring it in, and we'll dispose of it for you!) Then again, there's...

    Sanke keg further revealed!

Yuri, I don't see how you're going to remove the access cover, unless you also remove the spike from it. You have to lean the cover sideways to get it out. And, removing that spike is "fun." steve

    Sanke keg further revealed!

Yuri, some of the local micros use exactly that. A Cornie that has a Sankey tap connector, right in the middle of the oval port, and the oval port welded in place. The Cornie QDs have been removed, welded shut, and covered with rubber plugs. I've got one at work, full of Sonoran Root-beer...

    Bottling from a Keg.

That will work, too. As far as filling bottles from the keg, right out of the faucet, the boss aquired a keg of craft-built rootbeer, from a local Microbrewery. I wanted to take home a bottle of it. I cleaned my swing-top, put it in the cooler, and filled it after it was chilled...

    Emergency help please!

Are you going to have any electrolytic action, by running SS and aluminum in the same pot? Are you going to be using any copper/brass anywhere? I know that will cause some electricity to be produced, as well as corrosion and related stuff. It isn't the corrosion that is the problem here...
