    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Hey Nate n jbb3.... I'll let you know how things go, as I have a lager (kinda) in there now, with that John Q adams. It's been fermenting at about 55-60 degrees for the last 12 days, and I just emptied the trub the other day...but I had also emptied it prior to pitching the yeast, cos of the...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

+1 with jbb3 I've just finished an IPA with a ton of solids. And I currently have a John Q Adams in there conical. I approached these 2 different ways. The IPA, I emptied the ball after the initial fermentation only. Way too many solids in there, and even after emptying the ball, the solids were...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

jbb3 - Great idea! Let me know how it goes! It sounds like it oughta reduce the amount of sediment in the beer when bottled. I'm on a trip out of country for the next 2 weeks, so I have some red Irish in secondary in my carboy, but the FF is empty until I get back...so I'll be looking to see how...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Agreed...the science is the ultimate scale......but having a system that works as expected is not out of line. I received the new gasket, and it works great for me. I did have to put sandpaper on a block and plane the top... I also had to clean all the flashing off of the threads...what is...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Thanks guys! Good advice! Whenever I siphoned from the carboys into the bottling bucket in the past, I always had the tube of the siphon in the bottom of the bucket curled around, so it didn' splash, and caused a slight stirring effect to help mix the primer. I could do the same from the FF.and...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Ok...I just bottled my first batch from the FF. And started a new batch with the new seal. Here's my observations. Emptying the ball the second time before bottling yielded a good layer of yeast in the bottom, covered with a good layer of beer. No trub to speak of, after I had emptied it the...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

I picked up an extra ball just on the "crap breaks" rule. I haven't used it yet - first batch in the FF. When I emptied the trub at the end of active fermentation, there was a good layer of yeast bubbling in the top of the ball. I expect that if you emptied the trub out in the first couple of...

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Nice Setup, preamble! pauld315 - Not yet, I just received the new gasket myself, but I'm in the middle of a batch. I'll let you know how it works. It's a lot thicker, and looks to be made of silicon rubber.

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Yup, I hear ya. I was lucky the first time, and did the cream ale. I think if I had done an IPA, I'd have been in the same boat with a lot more sediment. I'm also bottling next week. I'm gonna try from the FF. I ordered a 1/2" spring loaded bottler wand that's coming in the end of this week, so...

Is my beer supposed to look like this?

Hey there larder. Ok...first off, fnord's advice is right solid. I'd follow it if I were you. Second....let me add a few things that might help explain a little. I'm a relative noob - only been brewing a year or so, so I can identify with the "OMG, I have BEER!" feeling, followed by the "What...

    Howdy from KC!

Oops! Ahem... it occurrs to me that if someone reads that I can't type "the info" correctly, they may surmise I may not be a good candidate to be adding ingredients to a brew in a club-type atmosphere.... :drunk: :D

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Ok...mid-cycle update. My cream ale was ready for secondary, so I put a plate under the ball, and closed the valve. Took the ball off, and boy, was it packed with trub! There was definitely yeast on the top, so it could have been harvested if I wanted to. But the trub inside was quite...

The "Mr. Beer goes horribly wrong" guy: Where he is today

Ok...this had me laughing so hard I had tears. The dry coconutting was priceless! But it also gves me hope! I also started years ago with Mr. Beer. Hope to be all-grain by years end. Then I'll also take the keg plunge.....

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Ok... I'm sold on the thermowell. In the past, I always kept the house at a decent ambient temp (65), and used the stick-on thermometers on my carboys. Now that my first batch is bubbling nicely in the FF, the house is still at 65 degrees, but the thermometer in the FF shows a wort temp of 74! A...
