    A quick hello from Ottawa

Absolutely and then you are the coolest person at the party with your home made beer!

    A quick hello from Ottawa

The "money saving" debate is something that gets talked about a lot lol. It CAN save you money, but you can also spend a lot of time and money on equipment and ingredients. Since we are in Canada (where beer is more expensive than the USA) we have a much bigger "buffer zone" before before we...

    A quick hello from Ottawa

You can bulk buy a pound of hops with OBK, or I think there is a 55lbs bag of 2 row you can buy at Defalcos. It will save you some money in the long run but I dont bother. Beer brewing group is/was basically me and two other guys at work. One guy has been brewing for years and two of us...

    A quick hello from Ottawa

Still brewing here in Ottawa! Mostly do partial mash beers now and have got to a place where my beers are good and I really dont care much to go full all grain. As for Defalcos, I basically stopped going, maybe once in a blue moon when I really need something I forgot to order from OBK...

    Lagering time? Why?

It fermented at 8-10 C for two weeks. Then 20 C for one wk. Then back to 8 C for 2 days... It felt like I was moving it around a lot haha. Now bottles have been sitting at 8-10c for just over two weeks. I think what I will do is move half of them to the fridge (4C) and declare open season on...

    Lagering time? Why?

Long story short, I made a very nice partial mash Mexican lager. Used some liquid Mexican lager yeast, wakatu hops, 5 lbs grain mash, 3 lbs light LME, Irish moss... made a lot of care to ferment it at 10c... I guess what I am saying is that I put some effort into it. So now the beers have...

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

What's wrong with OB, Hite, and Case... It's like W 1000 a 750ml bottle when I lived there. Drink up , its the worst beer I've ever had but its cheap ha-ha... Actually I can totally see why it would be a popular hobby there. Are you in the army or a teacher?

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

Wow, I resurrected a monster! I would also agree that you can't factor in your time as an expense bc I hardly factory in my time spent mountain biking, shooting, or fishing as an expense tacked on to those hobbies. I guess if you are trying that hard to save money brewing you would...

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

Wow... Yes that is worse than Canada... I remember I was in Germany and Czech republic and drinking all these great beers for about .75 cents Canadian... That was in the shopping market near my hostel. So probably expensive for there! In Canada those beers would have been about $2.50 each at the...

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

Its literally all over the map... I will say this: it is one of the few hobbies where you can actually save a few bucks or at least break even. My two friends that really got me into home brewing, one is still doing simple kits (with a bit of tweaking) and I imagine he saves a lot of money...

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

Haha I wont! I bought a case of Tecate beer there when I was visiting the parents lol. I want to say it was under $1 a beer when it was all said and done... now this was 2 years ago when the Canadian dollar was actually above the American dollar... and a tall boy of Tecate beer here in Ottawa is...

Sanitizing fruit with no rinse sanitizer, can it be done?

I make a wheat beer where I rack it onto a few packages of frozen raspberries... I do not sanitize, boil them or anything... raspberries are likely washed and flash frozen, thus probably fairly clean and the beer already has a high enough alcohol content to take care of any bacteria in there...

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

I know this is an old thread but somehow I came across it... let me add that if you are in Canada you are absolutely saving money brewing your own beer. When I was last in Florida I looked at the beer prices and thought "Why would anyone down here brew their own beer?" At that point it is...

    Wakatu hops?

I was trying to get some input on another section on Wakatu hops with little luck so I thought maybe I should just post it in this section with a more general question. Anyone used Wakatu hops in a lager? How much in a 20 liter batch? 1 ounce to bitter + 1 ounce at flame out? Opinions in...

Brewing with Loose Leaf Hops - need advice

They are good for dry hopping, I have not tried them in a boil... but I can say 1-2 ounces in a hop bag (hop sock, mesh bag, whatever you want to call it) for dry hopping in an IPA is great.

    Mexican Lager and Wakatu Hops?

I have a Mexican lager on the horizon... I have been doing a partial mash BIAB style, then adding a 3 lbs can of LME to my beers and results have been very good. I wouldn't mind some input for this Mexican lager Partial Mash: 2 lbs 2 row 1 lbs pilsner 1 lbs flaked corn 1/2 lbs...

    Fruit extract question

Yeah actually the one time I added 4 oz it tasted odd and fake tasting... I just do 1 oz if I want a slight hint of the flavour and 2 oz if I want to actually taste it. 3 oz - 4 oz is too much imo. I like wheat beers with just 1 oz of the blueberry or cherry one in a full batch… although...

    Cider lightly carbed, why?

I primed it with dextrose... Like I do all my beers... I guess there are some bubbles, just very, very little. Will wait another week and see I guess?
