    Alcohlic warmth in Apfelwein

I opened up a bottle of Apfelwein the other day that was utterly delious! On top of being about 8 months old, there was an overwhelming alocholic warmth to it. I had to crack open a couple more to try to find if they all aged that well, and sadly they didn't. My question: Is there a way to...

    Brewing for Charity...

you could always just pre-pick the style (say one of AHB's 50cent beers) and not give them that much of a choice. The real price is going to come from bottling, since you'd have to 'donate' 50 bottles to the cause. Another idea, you could give them a 'budget' of $30 to spend on a kit, and...

    new recipe. need opinions

one note, your time frame is wrong. You need more to the tune of 10-14days in primary, 2 weeks in secondary, 2-3weeks in bottle, then enjoy. If you want it quicker, you can skip the secondary, and increase primary to 14-20 days to play it safe. Still need 3 weeks in bottle to properly carb...

    Starbucks to experiment with beer?

I don't see this working. I can't really think of people that would choose to go to Starbuck to get a BMC (do you really think they would do good beer?) rather then a bar where it's 1/2 the price. Might work with wine though... In the long run, I feel the laws for liquor lisences and such...

Best response to telling someone you homebrew

my normal 1st comment is, "so how much do you sell it for" (6pack costs 24empties, I haven't upgraded to kegging yet) Although, this weekend someone tried my brand new stout, "wow, that tastes a lot like soy sauce, I bet it would be great on rice" then she chugged the rest of the beer. But...

    kit upgrade recommendations?

to answer the question of how to spend the $100, get the bench capper (since your having issues with the butterfly) and then I'd recommend getting more fermentors (better bottle or just another brew bucket) so you can make more batches at once! Or get a good pot/fryer set up so you can start...

Malkore's (not so) Ancient Orange Mead

JAOM uses raisins, but MAOM doesn't... any reason why?

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I agree, except my 'local' HBS is about 2 hours away. And I just went over the weekend to get a double brew set up for Friday :) So it's going to be another 3-4weeks til I'll head over again. I was just looking to get this going tonight so its that much less time til I get to taste it...

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

what about a water jug? that seems like it would hold any flavors. I don't have an empty wine jug or any large gallon sized glass jugs.

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I've seen a couple people talk about using a milk jug for their primary, does this work? Just cut a hole in the lid, and make a blow off tube? If so, then I know what I'll be doing tonight!

    LHBS Startup

You could have some luck calling up a LHBS a couple of towns over and ask them what they suggest (be sure to go far enough way to not affect their sales) since they do it, they can give you an idea of what you'd need as a minimum. Could help making sure you don't buy a ton of product x when it...

    Wedding Brew Ideas?

I"m actually setting up to make a couple different ones for my sister's wedding. Ask the bride and groom their favorite types and make that... for that time of year and OktoberFest or a spiced christmas style beer and a pale ale combo seems like a good mix.

    Great beer, wrong color.

you could go the cheating way and use food coloring :) But besides that, you can't really change this batch (if that was the question)

Free Brewmasters Tasting Kit - Killian's Red

I read this post awhile ago, and ordered 5 sets (sent them to my neighbors) just to get a nice collection of sample glasses... and now I find out they are plastic... kind of upsetting, but they were free so whatever. Nice opener though.

Best Wee Heavy Kit from AHB?

I'm looking to make a good Wee Heavy and I like 2 types offered by Austin HomeBrew, the 120/- and the Scotch Ale. Both are the same price and the 120/- is 8.9% scotch ale in at 8% abv. Anyone ever make these and can give advice on which to pick? Both sound tasty, but I can't afford to...

    my airlock water evaporated?

if it happened that quickly I'm more inclined to think that it was active fermentation that pushed out the water over evaporation. Had that happen to me a couple times and never any issues from it so far.

    1st batch under my belt

    1. I call it apple-wine, its just apple juice, sugar and yeast. Tons of topics about it. Easy to make, easier to drink. 2. read shecky's 3. read shecky's 4. you'll need to buy something. There should be posts here somewhere about making a "swamp cooler" which basically is a rubbermaid bin...
