A few more questions for the second batch...

Even though your lock is not bubbling, the slightest bit of CO2 will provide a thin layer of protection over the surface of the beer. Just transfering from primary to secondary stirs the beer enough to release the CO2 in sufficient quantities to perform this function.

    pvc faucet on cooler

Cream colored is correct. That is the CPVC which is rated at higher temp. It still is not rated at boiling temp but definitely better than the normal PVC.

    Adding Steam to Mash Tun

Darn you vtfan... This article is awesome IMO. Just more equipment for me to spend money on! Darn you again... but thanks for the link :D

    Ice in your brew

I am NOT speaking from personal experience here, but I have read on many occasions where people do this very successfully. I have even read it here on this forum but I'm too lazy to dig back through the archives and provide a link... I'll leave that to you if you so desire! Beware however, if...

    Interesting eBay Item

I've decided to build one myself. I am going to do away with the ice jugs though by using a peltier cooler. This really raised the cost of the cooler but hey, I'm having just as much fun building stuff as I am brewing beer! When completed, this unit will require no attention (ice jugs) and...

    Ye Old Moldy Ale

So it is done with the heavy fermentation... leave it go! I wouldn't scrape and reboil. Is your airlock poping at all? Even every 30 -60 seconds? This would indicate that the initial heavy fermentation is done and it's just on its course to becoming beer!

Guess I'll have to wait till they have one in BFE. Thats the largest city nearby here

    Propane Burner/Cooker suggestions?

At about 15 bucks for the 5gal propane tank, that is a big part of the expense of a batch of beer! If your spending only 10-15 bucks on ingreedients this makes a huge percentage :( I am one who fortunately can, so I will spend it if this is something that will improve the quality of my beer but...

    Carrying over yeast

I've done a bit of research on this and it is my conclusion that I will save my yeast for 8 months in the fridge in the fashion you have described. This is just a comfortable ammount of time based on what I have read and I don't feel that I am stretching it any with this number. Your technique...

    words of whit?

This one has yet to be bottled / drank so I can't vouch for final taste but it fits the description you are looking for. This thing was in primary for 13 days and I finally moved it to secondary although it was still bubbling every 10 seconds!!! 25 days since brew day now and it still shows...

    Cr@%%y digital thermometers.

VTfan, if you would please answer me this... The failure of most of the thermometers with a flexible cord is in that the cord is not waterproof. The tip should not be submerged past the solid part or liquid will get into the probe. Does this one seem to be sealed? Did you submerge the cord...

    newbie here

Yes they do have 6 and 6.5 gal carboys. I would also highly recommend the auto syphon right off the bat. You will always buy more toys down the road if you continue in the hobby!!! The price on this one seems high to me... you may want to look around a bit more. If I remember correctly, I...

    Mash/Lauter tun dimensions

Could you please tell me the dimensions of your cooler and the depth of your grain bed with the ammount of grain you use? I am trying to size up a cooler for my mash/lauter tun. I have been doing a bit of research and just getting confused. I would like to make one which could serve for both 5...

    I cooked my yeast

If you had signs of fermentation (air lock bubbles, foam ring at the top of the fermenter) then you did not completely destroy your yeast with the heat. If any was left and it did give these signs then you are o.k. The higher temps may lead to off flavors but your yeast worked. It sounds like...

    Air lock action

It is not advisable to open up your fermenter due to sanitation concerns but... it is important to know whether your yeast is active and fermenting your wort. Just my opinion on how much time to wait... I would at least give it another night. If you do end up opening it then after not seeing...

    Air lock action

Yeast will 'activate' in the wort in which you place it. Liquid, dry, smack packs... doesn't matter, if the yeast is good it will activate on its own. Starters are nothing more than giving your yeast a head start by making a mini batch of beer. The smack packs do have an 'activator' in them...

    Yeast Starter...

The vigorous initial fermentation could very well be done within that time period. I would expect that if you watched your brew for a bit, you would find that you still have some activity as indicated by the air lock. Although the 'initial' fermentation is done, I would recommend you allow it...

I want to AG this Fall....

Besides the mash/lauter tun, grain mill and various kettles, what is required to step up from partial mash to all grain? Looks like a ph test kit is needed. Any recommendations on style / brand which would be good for this? Anything else specific to the mash/lauter that would be needed? I'm...

    Secondary Fermentation

Ok, this honey brew I made 13 days ago is still going strong. The airlock is clicking one off every six seconds still. The brew I made 6 days ago is sitting in a carboy next to it and is clicking about every 15 seconds which is more in line with my past experiences. I have pretty much made up...
