  1. Fridge

    Fridge

Old keg fridge. I used this with commercial beers for many years and have yet (but do plan on) converting it over to house three corny kegs with three taps on the front. It will hold more than three I'm sure but I will only put three taps. The freezer is a great storage place for hops and the...
  2. FermentationCooler

    FermentationCooler

I went a bit overboard on my fermentation cooler! It is sized to hold four corny's or two 6.5 gal glass carboys per side. The two sides have independent temperature control and can either cool or heat!
  3. FermentationCooler4

    FermentationCooler4

The side view of the control unit of the fermentation cooler.
  4. FermentationCooler3

    FermentationCooler3

Fermentation cooler dual controller and one of the two peltier units.
  5. FermentationCooler2

    FermentationCooler2

Two carboys inside one side of the fermentation cooler. The top shows the inner side of the peltier cooler outfitted with a fan. The temperature sensor wire is seen running down to an insulated sleeve which detects the wort temperature more accurately than if it were just hanging inside the...

    Amount of water?

Another point of adding water to grain instead of grain to water: If you have a tub full of hot water and start adding grains, the grain will rise to the temp of the water (the initial addings) and with the strike temps home brewers use, you stand the chance of releasing tannins. If you have a...

Sorry, off topic but... Mmmmm.... P = I E Purely resistive load too.

    Did I Ruin My Kettle?

This is a brew kettle correct? The temperatures of the brew kettle reach 212f which kills all of the bacteria. This is one of the reasons we boil the wort. If this were a fermenter I would be concerned that some little nook or cranny would evade a sanitizer and leave harmful bugs which could...

    Cost of a brew.

Something I haven't seen mentioned... propane! I fill my propane tank (5 gal) at 15 bucks a pop around every four batches. This is $3.75 a batch witch makes it rank right on up there with the cost of hops and yeasts.

    Building RIMS - electrical question

ok, if its rated at that amperage, it should do but as TNlandsailor suggested, perhaps a heat sink on the component would have saved it. If you are spending that much on an SSR, perhaps you should take the advice of jjsscram and use a relay driven by the output of the PID controller. This...

    Building RIMS - electrical question

Im confused on your SSR ratings Akula... the power side is rated at 40W ?? Seeing how it didn't just burn up, I would think that this is the power dissipation of the SSR when at max rated load. Is there a current rating on the power side as well? This componenet should have some rating...

    Yeast starter

You can throw it in as long as you have brought it up to room temp. The purpose for the starter is two fold though... to verify the yeast you have saved is still alive and to give the yeast a chance to multiply and become active prior to pitching which is better for the fermentation. Why would...

    Experience with WLP029 (Koelsch yeast)?

I have used it on several occasions. I have had no problem with the final product. I did not notice an excessive sulfur smell while the batches were fermenting.

What's the hardest part of homebrewing?

By the time I pitch, I have had a good six pack or more. The cleanup is a dreaded step at this point due to my current state of mind! I'm ready to go relax with a few more home brews but instead it is getting late and dark and I have to drag my equipment to the curb to hose it all down and...

    Manifold Slot Sizing

Using a hack saw, I got a thin piece of wood about eight inches long and an inch wide and used a couple of small c clamps to clamp the wood to the side of the blade. Using this, I could control the depth of every cut and I went through several dozen slots very quickly. You don't have to...
