To answer your question, I use the 'Barley Crusher'. After looking at all the mills and adding up how much all of the 'options' costed, this one was very reasonably priced. Pay one price and get everything you need. The handle, hopper, extra drive gears etc. are either included or not needed. I...
insco2 you are currently using that motor? Thats pretty neat. No big pulleys and belts to deal with and the price is a great deal! How did you couple the mill shaft to the motor shaft?
I have done single step infusion with grains but I have not done multiple step. I stir any time I am adding steam to minimize any thermal gradients. I have a long stem thermometer so I can get pretty good readings from top to bottom and I have had good luck with that. Since I stirr, I avoid any...
Has anyone else tried out steam heating of your mash? I have recently added this feature to my outfit and so far I love it!
With a pressure cooker purchased from e-bay and the other parts purchased from Lowes, I have this system up and running for under $75 (propane burner which I use not...
I have had great results with vanilla extract. 3 oz to the bottling bucket for a 5 gal batch of vanilla cream ale. No sanitation concerns due to the alcohol content of the extract and no off flavors for me. I have done this recipe many times due to its popularity.
I have a 1/3 hp, 6 amp dryer motor which runs on 120v. It is 1760 rpm (or thereabouts). I use a 2.25 inch pulley on the motor shaft and a 12 inch pulley on the mill. The mill I use 'Barley Crusher' says to use it from 300 to 500 rmp if motorized. I fall in this range with my setup...
If you are using a false bottom in your brew kettle as a strainer, the hops act to further filter the hot break. Sparging or squeezing the hops bed would release this back to the wort which you are collecting. I imagine this would also hold true even if you were siphoning from the kettle.
I will give you no such advice since some lawyer would find a way to hold me accountable for your misfortune. However, I will share my techniques. I do use my propane burners in my garage. I crack the door open and also crack open the window. I have a fan going in there too. There is a...
On the left is the dual coil cooler which goes in the brew pot and will go below the surface of even a five gallon batch. On the right, the pre-cooler to submerge in the viewed turkey fryer which I fill with an ice bath.
Imagine my brew kettle on the floor next to this, the mash/lauter tun on the bench in the middle, one burner sitting on top of the bench with a half keg on it as the HLT and another burner on top of the bench with my pressure cooker on it for my steam supply. I will get pics next time I have it...
Mash/lauter tun with the drain manifold and steam manifold inserted. The steam manifold is held in place by copper tabs so none of this moves around as I stir.
