So I go to brew today...

This sounds like it might be my problem. I was just opening the valve with nothing connected. I'll hook it back up to the regulator tomorrow and see what happens.

So I go to brew today...

Get my specialty grains steeping on the stove, go outside to fill up the brewpot, and my propane tanks are frozen. D'OH! Stupid northeast winters... Anyway, I took the wort from the specialty grains and put it in a sanitized container in the fridge. I'm not gonna be able to brew again until...

    5 gallon oak barrels?

Check out http://tuthilltown.com/ They sell used oak whiskey barrels at pretty reasonable prices. You can also buy used oak staves if you want to keep costs down. It would be worth a trip since you're only in Philly.

Cutting Mitres for a keezer collar

Sorry, I actually got 1x8 oak. I'm wondering if I should be making my measurements on the inside of the mitred edge or the outside. I'm thinking that if I want the collar to be flush with the lip of the keezer I should measure the outside of the mitred edge.

Cutting Mitres for a keezer collar

Alright guys, I'm getting going on my second keezer (RIP first keezer). My first had a tower but this one will have a collar. I built a top and platform for the first one and had a pretty hard time with the mitres. There were a bunch of spots I was way off and needed filler pieces and putty to...

Q: About Pliny extract with pellets?

I did my Pliny clone with pellets and followed the recipe in Zymurgy. That recipe calls for leaf hops but I just used the same amount of pellets and it turned out great. Pellets are usually more efficient than whole leafs and you are "supposed" to use less hops if you're using pellets, but I'm a...

What Beer Was Your Point of No Return?

Three Pines IPA from a local brewpub The Gilded Otter http://www.gildedotter.com. Goes straight from the fermentation tanks to serving vats. It was my first experience with a true craft beer, even though I had had stuff like SNPA prior.

    why won't my keg dispense?

I don't think you understand what Nuggethead was saying. He's talking about the black quick disconnect on your keg post. Take that thing fully apart. Unscrew the top with a flathead screwdriver. Be careful you don't lose the spring or the little gasket. Make sure it's clear and put it back...

Help with Wyeast Activator American Ale

That yeast (I'm assuming it's the 1056 strain) is prone to arriving swollen at your door. Best bet is to make a small starter out of it. Don't worry about popping the "activator" if you do this. The pour the starter into your wort.

    Preparing Malt Extract for Use

Best bet is to put it NEAR thee flame while the water heats up. Turn it occasionally so all sides get some heat. Pour in as much as your can (turn off the flame before you add the syrup so it doesn't get scorched on the bottom of the kettle). Then if you have a valve on your kettle, use it to...

    Help w/oak barrel

As far as craftsmanship, I have been to Tuthilltown since I live about 25 min. away. They do have A LOT of barrels available and they are all of a very nice quality. The prices are the best around for what you are getting. You can also get some used oak staves made from used barrels for a bit...

    Beer Cities You've Visited

I found Burlington VT to be a pretty nice beer city. The Vermont Pub and Brewery, Zero Gravity at American Flatbread, a bunch of nice beer bars in the city, Magic Hat in South Burlington, The Shed, Switchback, Long Trail, Otter Creek, Harpoon. Wow, a lot more than I realized :-p

    Scotch in beer.

I made a Bourbon Barrel Porter kit from Northern. I used Wild Turkey 80 proof instead of the recommended Maker's Mark. I soaked the 2 ounces of oak cubes in 16 oz of the bourbon for 2 weeks while the beer was in primary then poured the bourbon and oak cubes right into the secondary. I think the...
